Coordinator Prof. Mário Lopes
2GROUP 1 Earthquake Engineering and Seismology
General Objectives
Since the beginning the research activities of
Group 1 aimed at characterizing the seismic risk,
including the characterization of hazard and
vulnerability of structures, and at studying
measures to reduce the seismic vulnerability of
structures. The activities were focused in the
following major research domains 1) tectonics
and seismology and 2) earthquake behavior of
structures (reinforced concrete and steel
structures, old masonry constructions, precast
reinforced concrete and underground structures).
3GROUP 1 Earthquake Engineering and Seismology
Main Achievements (2003 2006)
- improvement of the characterization of the
seismic hazard in Portugal - contribution to the
implementation in Portugal of the best practices
for seismic waveform data exchange, through the
operation of open broad band seismographic
stations - validation of the use of satellite
radar interferometry as a tool to detect
pre-seismic deformations - contribution to the
implementation of seismic protection of
structures by base isolation - development of
design methodology for the seismic design
underground structures - development of a new
design methodology based on rigid plastic
analysis for the seismic design of reinforced
concrete structures - development of design and
modelling strategies for static and dynamic
analysis of old buildings - definition of
reversible strengthening solutions for ancient
structures.
