Lucas 15 - 25
Hubo en tiempo de Herodes, rey de Judea, un
sacerdote llamado Zacarías, del grupo de Abías,
casado con una descendiente de Aarón, llamada
Isabel. Ambos eran justos a los ojos de Dios,

pues vivían irreprochablemente, cumpliendo los
mandamientos y disposiciones del Señor. Pero no
tenían hijos, porque Isabel era estéril y los
dos, de avanzada edad.

Un día en que le correspondía a su grupo
desempeñar ante Dios los oficios sacerdotales, le
toco a Zacarías, según la costumbre de los
sacerdotes, entrar al santuario del Señor para
ofrecer el incienso, mientras todo el pueblo
estaba afuera, en oración, a la hora de la
incensación.

Se le apareció entonces un ángel del Señor, de
pie, a la derecha del altar del incienso. Al
verlo, Zacarías se sobresalto y un gran temor se
apodero de él. Pero el ángel le dijo No temas,
Zacarías, porque tu suplica ha sido escuchada.
Isabel, tu mujer, te dará un hijo, a quien le
pondrías el nombre de Juan.

Tú te llenaras de alegría y regocijo, y otros
muchos se alegraran también de su nacimiento,
pues él será grande a los ojos del Señor

no bebera Vino ni licor y estará lleno del
Espíritu Santo, ya desde el senó de su madre.
Convertirá a muchos israelitas al Señor ira
delante del Señor con el espíritu y el poder de
Elías, para convertir los corazones de los padres
hacia sus hijos, dar a los rebeldes la cordura de
los justos y prepararle así al Señor un pueblo
dispuesto a recibirlo.

Pero Zacarías replicó Cómo podré estar seguro
de esto? Porque yo ya soy viejo y mi mujer
también es de edad avanzada. EI ángel le
contestó Yo soy Gabriel, el que asiste delante
de Dios. He sido enviado para hablar contigo y
darte esta buena noticia.

Ahora tú quedaras mudo y no podrás hablar hasta
el día en que todo esto suceda, por no haber
creído en mis palabras, que se cumplirán a su
debido tiempo.

Mientras tanto, el pueblo estaba aguardando a
Zacarías y se extraviaba de que tardara tanto en
el santuario. Al salir no pudo hablar y en esto
conocieron que había tenido una visión en el
santuario. Entonces trato de hacerse entender par
senas y permaneció mudo.

Al terminar los días de su ministerio, volvió a
su casa. Poco después concibió Isabel, su mujer,
y durante cinco meses no se deja ver, pues decía
Esto es obra del Señor. Por fin se dignó quitar
el oprobio que pesaba sobre mí.

 5 In the days of Herod, king of Judea, there
was a priest named Zacharias, of the division of
Abijah and he had a wife from the daughters of
Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth.
14
6 They were both righteous in the sight of God,
walking blamelessly in all the commandments and
requirements of the Lord.
7 But they had no child, because Elizabeth was
barren, and they were both advanced in years.
15
 8 Now it happened that while he was performing
his priestly service before God in the appointed
order of his division,
9 according to the custom of the priestly
office, he was chosen by lot to enter the temple
of the Lord and burn incense.
16
10 And the whole multitude of the people were in
prayer outside at the hour of the incense
offering.
11 And an angel of the Lord appeared to him,
standing to the right of the altar of incense.
17
12 Zacharias was troubled when he saw the angel,
and fear gripped him.
13 But the angel said to him, "Do not be afraid,
Zacharias, for your petition has been heard, and
your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you
will give him the name John.
18
14 "You will have joy and gladness, and many
will rejoice at his birth.
15 "For he will be great in the sight of the
Lord and he will drink no wine or liquor, and he
will be filled with the Holy Spirit while yet in
his mother's womb.
19
16 "And he will turn many of the sons of Israel
back to the Lord their God.
17 "It is he who will go as a forerunner before
Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, TO TURN
THE HEARTS OF THE FATHERS BACK TO THE CHILDREN,
and the disobedient to the attitude of the
righteous, so as to make ready a people prepared
for the Lord."

18 Zacharias said to the angel, "How will I know
this for certain? For I am an old man and my wife
is advanced in years."
19 The angel answered and said to him, "I am
Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God, and I
have been sent to speak to you and to bring you
this good news.
21
20 "And behold, you shall be silent and unable
to speak until the day when these things take
place, because you did not believe my words,
which will be fulfilled in their proper time."
 21 The people were waiting for Zacharias, and
were wondering at his delay in the temple.
22
 22 But when he came out, he was unable to speak
to them and they realized that he had seen a
vision in the temple and he kept making signs to
them, and remained mute.
 23 When the days of his priestly service were
ended, he went back home.

24 After these days Elizabeth his wife became
pregnant, and she kept herself in seclusion for
five months, saying,
25 "This is the way the Lord has dealt with me
in the days when He looked with favor upon me, to
take away my disgrace among men."

The Catholic Church observes the birth of John
the Baptist because he was the greatest of the
prophets, and announced the coming of Jesus.
This is one of the Mysteries of the Faith. When
we celebrate the birthday of John, we also
celebrate the birthday of Jesus.

is born of an old woman who is barren. Christ is
born of a young woman who is a virgin.
Barrenness gives birth to John, virginity to
Christ. The normal and proper age of parents was
lacking with the birth of John.

diminish and the night begins to grow longer.

Zechariah and Elizabeth were a continuation of
the faithful remnant of the Old Testament. Both
were righteous in the eyes of God. Ambrose
(Exposition of the Gospel of Luke 1.16-16)
reminds us that their character was praiseworthy.
They transmitted an inheritance of immaculate
purity.

It is fitting that the forerunner of Christ ought
to have such ancestors. Zechariah is not only a
priest but also of the course of Abijah (i.e., a
noble among his wifes ancestors). And Elizabeth
was of the daughters of Aaron.

You will see that they were all women with lots
of faith in God. That is what we need, models of
faith for infertile women who are in need of
healing. If God did it once, he can do it again.

Ephrem the Syrian (Commentary on Tatians
Diatessaron 1.10), says that John heralded the
end of Old Testament worship. When Zechariah
became dumb, it was to show that the mysteries of
the sanctuary had become silent, for he who was
to fulfill these mysteries had come.

The greatness of John was in proclaiming the
coming of the Lord by leaping in his mothers
womb. When Our Lady came to Elizabeth, she said,
For behold, when the voice of your greeting came
to my ers, the babe in my womb leaped for joy
(Luke 1.44).

1.31.33) notes that John would be great-not
through bodily virtue but through magnanimity.
Many will rejoice at his birth, for he will be
great in the sight of the Lord (Luke 7.28).

We join the many who rejoice today because we
remember what happened to the precursor of Jesus
our Lord and Savior. The best preparation for
Christmas is to imitate him, by being filled with
the Holy Spirit. Let us spend extra time in
prayer before the Blessed Sacrament, and by
praying with the holy rosary. Our Lady will show
us the way to her Son.

recordamos lo que sucedió al precursor de Nuestro
Señor Jesucristo. La mejor preparación para la
Navidad será imitarlo, llenándonos del Espíritu
Santo. Vamos a pasar tiempo extra en oración
antes del Santísimo Sacramento del altar, quizás
orando con el santo rosario. Nuestra Señora nos
mostrará el camino a su Hijo. Joia! Alegría!
