DEFINITION
  • A kind of language using figures of speech.
  • These figures of speech are kinds of comparisons.
  • When like or as is used to compare two
    things, the comparison is called a simile.

EXAMPLE
  • The orchestra drums rumbled like thunder.
  • The cozy kitten was as snug as a rug.
  • The thick grass was like carpet under our feet.

PRACTICERead, think, decide which are similes.
  • Paying bills is like having your teeth pulled.
  • The moon was a silver ship sailing through a
    cloudy sea.
  • Floating on ones back is like riding between
    two skies.

  • A simile is a kind of figurative language.
  • Similes compare ideas.
  • When like or as is used to compare two
    things, the comparison is called a simile.

PROJECT
  • In a small group or on your own, write five
    similes.
  • Write them on a poster to present to the class.
    You should only write the first part of the
    simile. The class will help fill in the blank.
  • Draw a picture to go with each simile. When you
    are finished, present your similes to your class.
  • See example on the next page.
