  • Questions for Reading
  • William McDougall became governor.
  • Louis Riel was chosen as their leader because he
could speak English, and could provide leadership
because of his education in the East .
  • It demanded land, rights and privileges be
    respected under Confederation and
  • Males 21 and over allowed to vote
  • Public land controlled by provincial government
  • Treaties be made with Natives
  • French and English be used in courts and document
    in both languages
  • Provisional governments debts paid by Federal
    government
  • The Natives who did not live in the settlements
would not have the vote. Public lands should be
controlled by the provincial government. The
Métis demanded that treaties should be made
between the government of Canada and the various
Indian tribes. French and English should both be
used in the legislature and in the courts, and
all government documents should be published in
both languages. All the debts of the provisional
government should be paid by the Dominion
government. The Métis also demanded that no
members of the provisional government should be
held responsible for the events of 1869-70.  It
transferred ownership to Canadian government and
took away land rights from the Metis
  • Schulz wanted union with Canada and the
settlement of the West by English Protestants
from Ontario. He hoped to make a fortune in land
    sales to these new settlers.
