The Virginia Company

• A group of merchants in England, The Virginia
  Company, founded the 1st permanent colony (May
  1607) in Jamestown, VA
• Jamestown was important to NC because
• John Smith searched for colonists of the Lost
  Colony
• Africans arrived providing labor, and
• Tobacco became the 1st great crop

Carolana

• Land between FL and the Albemarle Sound named
  after King Charles I

Settlers from the North

• The need for more land brought Virginians to the
  area North of the Albemarle Sound
• Nathaniel Batts 1st permanent white settler in NC

The Lords Proprietors

• 8 supporters of King Charles II
• granted the Heath patent
• Created 3 counties (along the coast of Carolana)
• Albemarle
• Clarendon
• Craven
• Governor ? Council ? Assembly

Culpeppers Rebellion

• Began when the Proprietors tried to enforce the
  Navigation Acts of 1651, 1660 and 1673
• These acts stated that the colonies could only
  use English vessels for their trade shipments

Gibbs Rebellion

• A rebellion over who had the right to be governor
• John Gibbs challenged the Proprietors for this
  position

North Carolinas First Towns

• In 1706, John Lawson founded Bath, the first town
  in NC
• New Bern was found in 1710 by a group of German
  and Swiss Protestants, led by Christoph von
  Graffenried, who wanted to escape religious
  persecution in Europe

Carys Rebellion

• A religious struggle between the Anglicans and
  Quakers over the practice of religious beliefs

Tuscarora War

• 3 reasons for the conflict between the
• Tuscarora and settlers
• White traders often cheated the Indians
• Indian slave trade began to include the Tuscarora
• The number of settlers on Indian land was
  increasing

Effects of the War

• Many Tuscarora
• were killed or enslaved
• left Carolina to settle in NY and Canada
• Tuscarora land was left open for settlement
• The colony
• suffered severe damage and was deeply in debt
• laws were revised to improve government and
  transportation
• land was opened up for settlement

Carolina Pirates

• The Golden Age of Piracy the period between 1689
  and 1718
• Edward Teach (Blackbeard) and Major Stede Bonnet
  2 of the most well-known pirates of NC

Settling the Cape Fear Region

• The area around the Cape Fear River became the
  last area of coastal NC to be permanently settled

The End of Proprietorship

• On July 25, 1729, North Carolina became a royal
  colony governed by the crown
