The Great March
  • Chinese nationalists and the US conformed
against communism so it could stop from
spreading. The US refused to recognize the
communist group on the China mainland, which was
quite a large portion of land. Communism in
China started by Mao Zedong who wanted a new
start for China. He wanted everyone to be equal,
including the peasants. In 1927 Communists led by
Mao escaped from Nationalists who had them
surrounded and were ready to get rid of all the
communists. They escaped by retreating into the
mountains. They crossed 18 mountains ranges and
24 rivers, a distance of about 6000miles. Maos
goal was to achieve communism by getting support
of the Chinese peasants and not the proletariet.
to ensure the programs success, they met with
the peasents and listend to their problems.

  • In this picture Mao is among his followers and in
the backround is a place that looks like
paradise. This picture is telling people that
society wants Mao and also a better China.

American Containment is not enough
  • America tried to contain communism and supported
the Nationalists but at the same time they were
trying to be the peace makers between the two
forms of government. However the Containment
    failed and China became communist.

5
  • The US did not send soldiers to back up the
nationalists but they did send 2billion dollars
worth of military equipment to China. But the
Nationalist leadership was corrupt and Communists
had won the peasants to their side. In congress
, conservative Republicans and Democrats attacked
the Truman administration for supplying only
    limited aid to Chiang.(Danzer)

Communists
  • Ruled the north after the war
  • Relied heavily on financial aid form the Soviet
    Union
  • Propaganda campaigns were built around the theme
    of national liberation.
  • Promise of land reform appealed to peasants
  • Experienced Guerrilla army was highly motivated.
    (Danzer)

Nationalists
  • Ruled in the south of China after WW1
  • Relied heavily on financial aid from the United
    States
  • Government adopted a new constitution in 1946
  • Government struggled with inflation and a failing
    economy

    morale (Danzer)
