Digestion Review
  • MOUTH
  • Mechanical and Chemical Digestion begin in the
    mouth
  • Saliva is produced by the salivary glands and
contains enzymes which help to speed up the
process of digestion. This is the Chemical Part
    of digestion in the mouth.
  • The teeth and tongue help to break up the food
you eat this is the mechanical part of
    digestion in the mouth.
  • ESOPHAGUS
  • coated in mucus
  • Connects the mouth to the stomach
  • A wave like motion called peristalsis moves food
    down this organ.
  • STOMACH
  • J-shaped organ
  • Coated in mucus so the hydrochloric acid that
helps the enzyme pepsin will not burn the lining
    (ulcers)
  • Muscles here mechanically break down food while
    enzymes chemically break it down.
  • SMALL INTESTINES
  • MOST CHEMICAL DIGESTION TAKES PLACE HERE!
  • The pancreas sends juices here and the liver
sends the bile (which is stored in the gall
    bladder)
  • The Small intestine even makes its own juices
    full of enzymes
  • Villi at the end of the S.I. absorb food into the
bloodstream so it can be taken to all parts of
    the body
  • LARGE INTESTINES
  • Undigested food moves here to prepare to exit the
    body
