a MAJORITY of votes) Andrew Jackson won the
Popular Vote -John Q. Adams chosen over Jackson
as President - Clay had the power to swing the
election either way - Jacksonians Called corrupt
bargain because Jackson had most
votes -Jacksons supporters formed Democratic
Party and opposed Adams policies

requirements for most states - Election of 1828 3xs more people could vote
- (Excluding AA and W)
- These new voters WERE NOT The ELITE!

- So popular that Record numbers of people came
to Washington to see Old Hickory inaugurated

national nominating conventions

-Common Mans President -creation of the
Spoils System to the Victor goes the Spoils
- Replaced federal employees with loyal
Jacksonians -greater democracy, but women and
minorities still ignored -Great Silence over
the issue of slavery
8Nullification Crisis
-debate over high tariffs -Tariff of
Abominations 1828 (another HIGH tax on Imported
goods, forced the S to buy the more expensive N
manufactured goods) -John C. Calhoun Vice
Pres. -theory of nullification -
States had the right to Nullify Calhouns S.C.
Exposition and Protest -S.C. threatens secession
after another Tariff of 1832 -Jackson threatens
the use of force March troops into SC to enforce
the tariff and hang Calhoun -Henry Clay
organizes a compromise
9Nullification Crisis
-Henry Clay (THE GREAT COMPROMISER) organizes a
compromise- It would gradually lower
duties over a ten year period. For now
the crisis between states rights and federal
authority was controlled--- but the issue would
continue to cause conflict in the 1840s and 1850s
and would be a major cause of the Civil War.
10Indian Policy
-different views about Indian policy 2- 1.
Displacement 2.Convert -Indian Removal Act,
1830 Federal Govt provided funds to
negotiate treaties that would force NA to move
west. Pg- 227 -Cherokee takes the issue to the
Supreme Court and wins -Worchester v. Georgia -
John Marshall has made his decision now let him
enforce it. Build a fire under them. When it
gets hot enough, they'll go. -Jackson ignores
the court and orders removal -Trail of Tears,
1838
11Indian Policy
-Jackson ignores the court and orders removal
- Only 20,000 Cherokee still remained in the
East, President Martin Van Buren (Jacksons
successor) ordered their forced removal. -
Under General Winfield Scott, most of the
remaining Cherokee were rounded up and drove into
Concentration camps to await the journey -Trail
of Tears, Oct. 1838 - Grouped by the 1,000s
- 800 mile trip to a reservation out west
- buried more than a quarter of their people
along the way

13National Bank
-Jackson disliked the Bank of the U.S. -thought
it an abuse of power and served the wealthy
first -thought it lacked the constitutional
ability to exist -Jackson vetoed the new charter
for the bank and withdrew all govt
funds -Jackson placed govt funds in favored
state banks which critics called the Pet Banks
which led to a monetary crisis
"The Bank," Jackson told Martin Van Buren, "is
trying to kill me, but I will kill it!"
14Whig Party - A new Political Party forms by
Henry Clay, John Quincy Adams and Daniel
Webster. - Angered by Jacksons tactics
Jackson does NOT run for a 3rd term -Democrats
choose Vice President, Martin Van Buren as their
candidate. - Newly formed Whig party was not
able to agree on a single candidate and ran
three.
15Van Buren
-Martin Van Buren was elected president after
Jackson -suffered b/c of Jacksons bank
policies -Panic of 1837 left many in bad
economic situations when Jacksons Pet banks
failed to hold enough Gold/Silver Money for
loans and Paper - 1/3 of Population out of
work lost all savings -Newly formed Whig
party gains strength
16Harrison and Tyler
-War hero William Henry Harrison becomes first
Whig President- immediately took steps to enact
Whig Program to revitalize the economy
-Harrison dies 1 month into office- Pneumonia
-John Tyler is first V.P. to become President-
Opposed many parts of the Whig Program for
Economic Recovery. Only on the ballot to pick up
Southern Votes. Never thought he would play much
of a role in govt BIG MISTAKE
