Age of Jackson1830s
2
Political Aspects in the 1830s
  • President
  • Andrew Jackson- U.S. president from 1828-1836
  • Democratic-Republican
  • First candidate from the West to win presidency
  • Appealed to the common man
  • Trends
  • Spoils System-Jackson gave jobs to loyal
democrats and to friends of influential members
of Congress in order to enhance support
  • Indian Removal Act of 1830 - This moved Cherokee
Indians from Georgia to Oklahoma (resulted in
    Trail of Tears)

3
Politics ContinuedIndian Removal Act
  1. White farmers wanting land in Georgia where the
Cherokees and other tribes were located pressured
the state government to remove the Native
Americans, in spite of the fact that, especially
the Cherokee had adopted the ways of the whites
    Constitution, branches of government, alphabet,
    clothing.
  2. Trail of Tears- Worcester vs. Georgia Court
found that Georgia did not have jurisdiction over
Cherokees, however Georgia and Jackson ignored
this. John Marshall has made his decision, now
    let him enforce it.
  3. Thus, in 1838-1839, Georgia evicted the
Cherokees and forced them to march westward. 25
died before they reached Oklahoma. Therefore,
Native Americans refer to this sad period of time

Bank War
  • Jackson was against the national bank because it
favored the wealthy and foreclosed on many farms
in the West hurting the American farmer.
  • Jackson vetoed a bill to recharter the Bank of
the U.S. in 1832 calling it unconstitutional in
spite of the fact that the Supreme Court said it
was constitutional under the McCulloch v.
    Maryland Case in 1819.
  • But Jackson acted as though the president was
superior to the Supreme Court claiming The Bank
is trying to kill me, but I will kill it.
  • The bank had four more years before the charter
ran out, but Jackson pulled all the federal gold
and silver out of the Bank and put it state pet
    banks.
