Adjectives- Review
  • There are three functions of the Greek adjective
  • An attributive adjective
  • A substantival adjective
  • A predicate adjective

3
Adjectives
  • An attributive adjective attributes a qualityan
attributeto the word it is modifying.
  • These describe something

4
Adjectives
  • A substantival adjective functions as if it were
    a noun.
  • It does not modify anything

5
Adjectives
  • A predicate adjective makes an assertion about
the subject and the verb, to be.
  • The to be verb can be either stated or implied.
  • The adjective is not immediately preceded by the
    definite article

6
Adjectives
  • Adjectives must agree with the nouns that they
modify in case, number, and gender.

7
Adjectives
  • Adjectives use the same
    case endings as the
    first and
second declension nouns we have already learned.

8
Adjectives
  • The lexical form of adjectives is the nominative
singular masculine, even if the adjective shows
    only the dative feminine form.

9

  • There are adjectives listed which list on two
    variants.
  • The first is the masculine/feminine and the
    second is the neuter.
  • The masculine and neuter are always the same
    declension
  • Context will show whether adjective is used as
    masculine of feminine

10
Neuter Plural Adjectives
  • Neuter plural subjects often take a singular
    verb.
  • This is used when the author is viewing the
subject NOT as a plural subject but as a singular
    collection.

11
3rd Declension
  • 1st declension words have stem endings in alpha
    and eta
  • 2nd declension nouns have stems ending in omicron
  • 3rd declension nouns have stems ending in a
    consonant.

12
3rd Declension - Function and meaning
  • All Greek nouns, whether they are 1st, 2nd, or
    3rd declension, function the same

13
3rd Declension - Hints
  • It is often difficult to determine the stem of a
    3rd declension noun
  • Memorize the genitive singular form with the
    lexical form
  • Whatever happens in the nominative singular also
    happens in the dative plural

14
3rd Declension - Hints
  • A nu drops out when followed by a sigma.
  • A tau drops out when followed by a sigma or if it
is at the end of a word.
