Title: MURAL ART of the NEW DEAL

1
MURAL ART of the NEW DEAL
2
The Works Progressive Administration (WPA) was a
New Deal measure to employ a variety of artists,
writers, and musicians so that the work they
produced could help them make a living and
subsequently enhance the quality of American life
during the Great Depression.

4
The WPA commissioned thousands of artists to
observe the American scene that is, its
people, its landscape, and its history to
capture through their brushstrokes the life they
were seeing.
5
Because the artwork produced was intended to be
displayed in some very prominent, public
buildings, the art had to conform to the demands
of the government who was paying for it.
Presumably, art across America needed to be
relative to the importance of the community.

7
The artwork, as planned, often helped unify
communities and provide struggling Americans with
a unifying sense of belonging.
