3First of all I feel necessary to underline the
contemporaneity of William Shakespeare and all
his works, in this case one of his best-known
tragedy the Hamlet. One of the most famous
soliloquy of literary culture is the Hamlets
one to be or not to be is one of the main
common question the human race used to do
beginning from the primordial ages. According to
me thats the reason makes this short extract of
William Shakespeare tragedy (and the whole text)
so modern.
4Although the themes and the way theyre described
can seem old-fashioned or hard-reading, I think
Shakespeare has reached up for his purposes in
fact I think he wanted to describe Hamlet and his
cruel story as an exemplum for all the human
race. I identify Hamlet with our role in this
world always in trouble, between life and death,
constantly trying to solve our problems, waiting
for something bigger than us
5So, thats the reason why everyone can identify
oneself with Hamlet I cant believe someone has
never felt Hamlets feelings. Thinking about our
life we can notice its very common take a
reflection-pause about life and death, about
reasons of something or simply about our
problems. So, from this point of view,
Shakespeares tragedy is easy reading, referring
to its themes. Maybe lexis or typical authors
expressions are more difficult or cryptic to
read. Nevertheless this shortage of modernity is
compensated by the actuality of the themes.
6 After having demonstrate Hamlet and
Shakespeares contemporaneity Im going to
describe the real soliloquy and all the meanings
connected to it. In his monologue Hamlet present
his interior dissension, due to hes living a
terrible moment of his life his father (the King
of Denmark) has been killed only two months by
his brother, Hamlets uncle (Claudius), who has
married Hamlets mother (Queen Gertrude).
7Hamlets soliloquy is linked to his purposes he
has just order to a group of actors to perform at
court The Murder of Gonzago, whose story is
similar to the one revealed by the Ghost (his
father). So he has planned to defeat all his
enemies, beginning from Claudius, trying to force
him to reveal his real actions and intentions. So
his mind goes to thoughts as life and death, or
similar to these.
8This monologue is concerning about his decision
between two opposites possibilities a future of
death, hate and vengeance or another one based on
life, waiting for Fortibras help. In his
soliloquy Hamlet presents the possible solutions
about his unhappiness first of all hes dubious
about solving his suffers or letting them
overcome himself, bearing them.
9Two are the main, and symbolic, solutions die
solving his trouble or sleep, bearing all.
Hamlets solutions present one of the main theme
of Shakespeares tragedy a strong contrast,
symbolic of the real dualism of human life The
contrast between life and death, heaven and hell,
good and evil, beautiful and ugly, black and
white, Between Hamlets father (symbol of
perfection) and Claudius (the worst man in the
world, according to Hamlet).
10So Hamlet is thinking about these contrast
merely about life and death Which is the best
solution? Moreover theres another hypothesis
take end to his madness killing himself so that
he will be free from all loads of human life
Its not a simple death but a suicide!
Nevertheless Hamlets final decision is quite
cryptic to read he chooses the best solution, in
my opinion LIFE! Reading the text it could be a
common mistake think Hamlet picks up Death as
solution because of Shakespeare uses a cryptic
language
11 The lexis could be misleady. If I read only
the words translated in Italian Ill obviously
think Hamlet chooses the cruel solution, but
after having studied the main themes of the
tragedy and read the hidden meanings of the
soliloquy (not only the simple translation) I
notice the real decision He wants to live I
think Hamlets soliloquy is more a philosophic
text than a simple extract from a tragedy it
presents the main common themes of philosopher
questions, problems and whatever linked to
philosophy.
12Ive notice in Hamlet soliloquy a sort of
Manicheism (as Ive said before the contrast of
black and white, good and bad,) so that the
characters have an unchangeable behavior Hamlet
is a dubious character, his father is a perfect
character and Claudius is a bad character. In the
whole story their status wont change.
13I think thats the rigidity of the characters
which was typical of Shakespeares works.
Nevertheless that wasnt a common feature of that
ages while Christopher Marlowes characters are
more linked to the classic world (latins authors
as Ovidio or Seneca) and his heroes are titanic
(Doctor Faust or Tamerlano are the best known
examples) Shakespeare, also referring to the same
classic sources, underlines a stereotype of hero
dubious (as Hamlet) and not sure about his
destiny (as Antonio, from the Merchant of
Venice).
14I think Hamlets main problem is about the
decision, not the simple contrast hes living an
interior dissension about it, hes dubious, he
doesnt know whats the right chosen (but he
knows which are his possibilities). However
finally Hamlet chooses Life as solution.
Obviously the final of his story doesnt coincide
with his hopes and decisions he dies, but
Thats a tragedy Someone has to die In fact, in
my opinion, Life is Hamlets hope, Death is
Destinys decision.
15Fortunately nobody can change the final destiny
the Dark Death, with her Scythe, will catch you,
at end. Everyone of us is on her list, which is
written with indelible ink
16 In this last paragraph Ill summarize the
meaning of the monologue or, at least, what I
hope Ive understand. Hamlet is a symbolic
character, thinking about humanitys problems
hes in right but nobody seems to understand him,
saying his problems grow up from his madness, due
to Ofelias love (according to Polonius). I can
hazard a similarity between Hamlets situation
and mine last school-year
17Ive passed last year, hating all the world
Nobody seemed to understand me, even the
majority of my friends Everybody used to say I
didnt study at home, they said I was lazy or a
donkey, This year Im demonstrating everyone of
them they were in fault I think Hamlet is having
the same situations hes in right, his uncle is
an usurper, his mother incestuous and hes
probably the only rational character in the whole
tragedy (referring only to the Danish court
Fortibras is a rational character).
18Only at the end of his story he will demonstrate
he was in right, but then he dies! Life is
Hamlets purpose to solve everything to live in
peace. I hope Ill reach up the same results,
changing only a thing I dont want to die at the
end! I want to live at least 90 years, enjoying
time and dying, due to natural causes Thinking
about modern culture and Medieval Ages, I can
notice easily a strong contrast theres a huge
gap between modernity and old-time
19It can seem a paradox referring to the beginning
paragraphs but, another time, Im in right the
themes, the problems, the questions exposed are
common in both ages, the lexis is quite similar
but the solutions, which Im referring above, are
in strong contraposition. While Hamlet thinks to
Death but chooses Life, at our age so many people
think to their life and choose Death! Maybe
modernity and technology arent so better than
Medieval Ages.
20I think today we have too much. I mean we want
everything Materialism has substitute, in our
soul, feeling as love, happiness, So that we
feel unhappy if we havent got SOMETHING! So many
people commit a suicide for futile reasons as
bankrupt, divorces, They probably are so busy in
planning their death they dont think that exist
someone who has no food, no water No future So
thats the reason why I admire Hamlet and his
noble soul.
21Saying this Ive concluded my relation about
Hamlets soliloquy.

22TO BE OR NOT TO BE...
Sheakspeare makes himself a question to be or
not to be? So, react or being overcoming by
problems? At first his solution is to be
overcoming by problems and so die, rather than
react in front of thousands obstacles that we
meet in our life. But thinking about what could
be after deathand the impossibility of face again
this choice, Sheakspeare revalues his thought,
conquer back his will to go on.
23 OUR OPINIONS This text is till very famous
thanks to the themes that are very currents. In
fact in this days we live in a society always
more complicate that brings mens to sopport
proofs always more difficults and thinking to
death like a solution. In our opinion the best
choice is to face problems and not to be
overcoming by them.
24We consider suicide an extremely act that brings
to something annow. All problems from easier to
harder are solvables with a complicate method,
than death with the help of people that we love
and with our will. Porcellato Sara - Trento

25RELATION ABOUT HAMLET Â After having read
Hamlets monologue we can say its very common to
reflect about life and death. In his monologue
Hamlet present his problems, hes desperate about
his desperate life his father has been killed by
Hamlets uncle, who has married Hamlets mother.
Hamlets soliloquy is connected to his intents
kill everyone at the end of the narration. This
monologue is about his decision between two
decisions that are very far life or death. In
his soliloquy Hamlet presents the possible
solutions about his problems, two are the main
solutions die or sleep.
26But theres another solution kill himself so
that he will be free. Otherwise he considers its
more nobler to live and not to die. That are
symbolic solutions that we should understand
thinking about Hamlet situation and ages (we
shouldnt notice a big gap between our ages and
Hamlets ages). He says theres no one who wants
to live with these sufferers. Hes in right but
nobody seems to believe him, saying his problems
is caused by his madness but, in our opinion,
hes the only in right. Only at the end of his
story he will demonstrate he was in right and,
doing this, he dies, although life was Hamlets
decision to solve everything and we agree with
him.
27So its difficult to notice the passing of time
between Shakespeares ages and our. He gives
solutions useful for both ages. We cant feel
distant from him and his intents. We can imagine
easily ourselves in his role in contrast with
everyone and everything We prefer live solving
our problems than bear the problems, suffering in
continuous. Saying this we mean we agree with his
nobles purposes but we hope to live, solving our
problems, without any sufferers Its quite
difficult but Hope is the last that die and we
hope to die at the same time AFTER EVERYTHINGH
AND EVERYONE!!! Â Marco CERARDI Federico ROSSATO

28HAMLET to be or not to be  ANALYSIS to be
for Hamlet means continue to live suffering in
the mind, because he doesnt resolve the
problems not to be for Hamlet means opposing at
the problems and die. In the first lines Hamlet
expresses his problem it is nobler to continue
to live suffering in the mind or to die resolving
the problems ? to die to sleep when we die
the troubles come to an end, when we sleep we
dream life after death.
29In Hamlet there is a desire to die, because he
can not endure all the troubles of his life.
(From line 15 to 19 he speaks about problems that
man undergoes in life) In Hamlets opinion what
stops man from death is the consequences of life
after death, because this thought makes us
cowards. The fear of something that is unknown in
life after death is what makes Hamlet continue to
live.
30OPINIONS Reading the poem, we have understood
that Hamlet lived a lot of troubles in his life.
His words are very strong and show us his frame
of mind. In our opinion the topic of this
Shakespearean poem is very actual, because every
day we listen to a lot of cases of suicide. Sure
enough there are a lot of suicides because people
dont like this life, or because there are to
much disappointments (all the examples that
Hamlet says are well founded even today).
31We think that Shakespeare wrote poems that live
over time and his poems are pieces of
art. Â Moresco Angela Squizzato Matteo Miotti
