• Lived in all regions
• Although most free, did not have same rights in
  north as whites. (especially being hired/fired
  at jobs)
• Most in south were slaves, conditions varied.
• Most free in South lived in cities, had skills of
  some type.
• Still did not have same civil or political rights

Standard 4.1Social Reform Movements

• Abolitionist (end slavery) movement-developed
  among Quakers (religion) that believed everyone
  had inner light
• Nat Turner, Frederick Douglas, Harriet Tubman
• Wrote books, had rallies, etc.
• Southern slave owners then thought they needed to
  justify slavery. Claimed they were better off
  than industrial workers in north.
• Abolition movement split over getting involved in
  politics or allowing women to speak in public
  against slavery.
• Finally abolition was effective during western
  expansion controversy.

• Abolition Movement was not successful influencing
  national govt (gag rule)
• Most northerners were not abolitionist
• Abolitionists helped some slaves escape on the
  Underground Railroad.
• Led by Republican party, a call was made to make
  land obtained in Mexican War, free soil.
  (didnt pass) Free-soil party emerged from this.
• Liberty party, free-soil, and some whig party
  members formed the Republican party advocating
  free soil
• Republicans were NOT, abolitionists, they said it
  shouldnt be expanded not abolished all together.

• Wilmots Proposal passed House but not Senate
• Republican candidate in 1860 was Abe Lincoln
  (they werent abolitionists)
• Dred Scott decision scared northerners that
  slavery couldnt be stopped from spreading.
• Since Lincoln won in 1860, southern states met to
  pass articles of succession.
• South feared Lincoln wouldnt allow spreading of
  slavery and that violated states rights.
• So they formed the Confederate States of America,
  and occupied federal forts in South.

• Allowed African Americans to enlist in U.S. Army
  (54th Massachusetts regiment)
• South Surrendered at Appomattox Courthouse
