  • CSC 212

2
HCI
  • Human Computer Interaction
  • study of interaction between people and computers
  • Want to improve interaction at the user interface
(or simply interface), which includes both
    software and hardware
  • Design is a key component

3
Design Interface
  • A number of diverse methodologies outlining
techniques for HCI design have emerged
  • Old model cognitive
  • New model constant feedback and communication

4
Design Methodologies
  • User-centered design widely practiced design
philosophy rooted in the idea that users must
    take priority
  • Principles of User Interface Design seven
principles that may be considered at any time
during the design of a user interface in any
    order Tolerance, Simplicity, Visibility,
    Affordance, Consistency, Structure and Feedback.

5
User Interface Design
  • Tolerance easier recovery from error
  • Consistency - How easy is it to learn and
    remember the appearance, positioning and
    behaviour of the elements?
  • Structure - Are the elements set out in a
meaningful way from the perspective of the user?

6
UID cont
  • 4. Simplicity KISS principle
  • 5. Affordance - How clear is the use of an
    element to the user?
  • 6. Feedback - Information sent back to user after
    their action
  • 7. Visibility - Clarity

7
HCI and Society
  • How can the study of HCI better our society?
  • What do you see in the near future?

8
Project Trade-Offs
  • What were some trade-offs you made in your design
    using Scratch?
  • What were some trade-offs you had to make when
    mapping the Wiimote?

9
Impacts on Society
  • What impact can the Wiimote have on society?
  • What impact can rehabilitation software using
    computers have?

10
