Activities
  • Teacher will read excerpts from Uncle Toms
    Cabin, written by Harriet Beecher Stowe who lived
    in Cincinnati. Students will discuss in groups
    what effect the novel may have had on people at
    that time. Class discussion of events that
    followed publication.
  • Students will play a simulated game, Underground
    Railroad, in which they take the part of
    passengers, conductors, and bounty hunters.

    illustrated timeline of events of the Civil War.
    Individually, they will choose one event and
    write about its importance.
  • Students will role play a political discussion
    between supporters of the war effort and
    opponents.

    about the Civil War.

    War.
  • Students will create an illustrated diary of
    their experiences at Ohio Village.
  • Students will read textbook section detailing the
    struggle of African-Americans in Ohio to fight
    for the Union.

    women faced during the war. They will brainstorm
    possible solutions.
  • Students will read about Margaret Garner, an
    escaped slave who killed one of her own children
    rather than return her to slavery. Class will
