Hitler Begins Domination

• Hitler occupies the Rhineland (neutral area on
  the border of France Germany) which he wasnt
  supposed to do.
• Forced Austria to unify with Germany under German
  rule. This union was called Anschluss.
• Hitler invades the Sudetenland region of
  Czechoslovakia.

Munich Pact

• Hitler meets with Britain and France in Munich to
  talk about his invasions.
• Neville Chamberlain from Britain and Edouard
  Daladier from France say, Its okay to take the
  Sudetenland, as long as you dont take anything
  else.
• Hitler says okay, then invades the rest of Czech.

Deal with Soviet Union

• Hitler went to Stalin in the Soviet Union and
  made a secret treaty.
• They agreed to
• Not attack each other
• Split Poland between the two of them

Invasion of Poland

• Hitler invades Poland. (1939)
• First time using their blitzkrieg strategy for
  war (meaning lighting war).
• It involved a surprise attack, and then using a
  huge amount of force in a quick period.
• Soviet Union attacked Poland from the east.
• No more Poland. ?

Soviet Unions Aggression

• Stalin goes on to invade and conquer
• Estonia
• Latvia
• Lithuania
• Finland
• (Notice that these are all territories that
  Russia lost after WWI.)

What are Britain France doing?

• Nothing!
• They werent prepared in time to help any of the
  countries that fell to Germany or the Soviet
  Union.
• France waited along the French/German border,
  prepared for an attack (but it didnt come from
  there).
• Began to call it a sitzkrieg (sitting war).

• Germany invades
• Denmark
• Norway
• Belgium
• The Netherlands
• Luxembourg
• France
• Only Great Britain remained under Allied control.
