What is The Civil War?

• The Civil War was fought between the Northern
  part of the United States and the Southern part
  of the United States.

Who Is Who?

• The North is known as The Union or as Yankees.
• The South is known as The Confederates or as
  Rebels.

Who Was Involved?

• The Confederate States of America selected
  Jefferson Davis to be their President.

Who Was Involved cont.

• The Union selected Abraham Lincoln as their
  President.
• He was elected in March of 1861.

The Main Generals

• The Confederate General was Robert E. Lee.
• The Union General was Ulysses S. Grant.

When Did This Happen?

• The Confederate States of America were formed on
  February 9, 1861.
• The war began on April 12, 1861.

Why Did They Fight?

• Abraham Lincoln was elected
• Slavery
• States rights (each state could create their own
  laws) vs. a Federal Government

• Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts,

• Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina,
  Tennessee, Alabama, Virginia, Mississippi,

• Fort Sumter was fired upon by the Union on April
  12,1861.

  E. Lee surrendering at Appomattox Courthouse.
