The Cappella del Cardinale del Portogallo to the left of the nave, "one of the most magnificent funerary monuments of the Italian Renaissance", was built in 1473 as a memorial to Cardinal James of Lusitania, who died in Florence, to which he was Portuguese ambassador, in 1459. It is the only tomb in the church.
Sergio Cerchi was born in Florence, where he still lives and works and where he received a diploma from the Porta Romana Art Institute and has attended courses at the Cherubini Conservatory. His education includes interconnected experiences in music and the visual arts.
Lodovico Pogliaghi was born in 1857 in Milan. He studied painting, sculpture and architecture at the Accademia di Brera under Pietro Magni, Giovanni Strazza and Giuseppe Bertini. Pogliaghi worked on the renovation of the Palazzo Turati in Milan in the 1880s but is probably best known for his 1904-08 depiction of the Virgin Mary's Sorrows and Joys on the monumental bronze doors of the Duomo in Milan. !!!!!
