  • 2. Inventors come up with ways to generate
    power using river flow (or streams)
  • 3. Develop power-driven machinery to speed up
    production
  • 4. British migrants bring ideas to America
    (start the development of machines here)
  • - Samuel Slater in 1793 starts Americas first
    textile factory.

  • In 1841, Francis Cabot Lowell developed a
    weaving factory in Lowell, Mass.
  • His factory attracts thousands of people in
    pursuit of jobs.
  • Lowell recruits young women (ages 15-29) to live
    and work at factory.

  • Promises parents strict moral supervision (in
    company dorms), requires church
  • attendance, and nightly curfew.
  • By 1840, Mill employed 8,000 workers about 40 of
    the population of Lowell.
  • -This factory system become a model for the
    Northern States.

  • In 1793, Eli Whitney develops the cotton gin.
  • a. This machine helps clean cotton (by
    removing the cotton seeds).
  • b. Cotton Gin makes cotton production very
    profitable (a new cash crop).

  • In 1837, Samuel Morse developed the telegraph.
  • - Sent signals along copper wire.
  • In 1837, John Deere develops a steel plow. This
    allows farms to use horses instead of oxen.

Transportation
  • Roads and rivers were most commonly used.
  • Industries developed turnpikes (private roads) to
    ship goods easier from factory to market.
  • - Those that used the turnpike would pay tolls
    to travel. The toll would help offset the cost.
  • In 1810 Steamboats are developed to help
    transport goods along the rivers.

  • Erie Canal Project begins in 1817. At the time
    the longest canal in the nation was 28 miles.
  • a. The Erie Canal would extend some 363
    miles.
  • b. The canal was dug by hand it was 40 feet
    wide and 4 feet deep.
  • c. The canal helped New York become the
    Easts biggest port city by 1830.
  • d. By 1840 the U.S. created more than 3,300
    miles of canals.
  • e. Later trains will be developed which
    would speed up travel.

    Canada (Alaska).
  • 2. European countries begin to re-take control
    of colonies they once had.

  • 3. Monroe Doctrine is passed in 1823.
  • a. It warned European nations not to
    interfere with land in the Western
    Hemisphere. America would consider any
    action dangerous to our peace and safety.
  • b. This would begin the U.S. policy of
    policing the world.

  • 1. Major issues on Slavery begin between
    northern and southern states.
  • 2. Current balance between slave states and free
    states (ten each). Becomes a representation
    issue.
  • 3. Missouri Compromise (this would tip the
    balance of representation power between
    states). Defined boundaries where slavery could
    exist (South) and where slavery was not
    acceptable.

  • 1. Indian Removal Act (1830) Federal government
    provided funds to negotiate treaties that would
    force the Native Americans to move west.
  • 2. Trail of Tears Cherokees were forced west
    (on foot) thousands dies on the trail to the
    west.

War Over Texas
  • Mexico gains its independence from Spain.
  • Mexico claims all the once Spanish land in the
    Americas (Mexico, New Mexico, California, Texas,
    Arizona, Nevada, and Utah).
  • Americans living in Texas (Mexican Territory)
    fight a battle at the Alamo (a fort in San
    Antonio) which would ultimately lay claim to the
    Territory of Texas.

War Over Texas
  • Texas becomes an independent territory (not part
    of the U.S.) known as the Lone Star State in
    1836.
  • Texas doesnt become a U.S. territory (state)
    until Dec. 29, 1945. (Becoming the 28th
    State).

  • Dispute between the boarder of Texas and Mexico
    leads U.S. troops and Mexican Army into war.
  • The American troops win battle after battle
    against the poorly lead Mexican army.

  • On February 2, 1848, The U.S. and Mexico sign the
    Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.
  • Mexico agrees to the Rio Grande border for Texas
    and ceded New Mexico, California to the United
    States.
  • The U.S. agreed to pay 15 million for more
    Mexican landCalifornia, Nevada, New Mexico,
    Utah, Arizona, Colorado, and Wyoming.
