Deutsche Grammatik
  • How do you find the case of a noun or pronoun?

2
But what is a case?
3
A case is a situation a noun or a pronoun is in
within a clause. It is a particular part of
speechthe function it has in the sentence.
4
Lets check for the case of the noun or pronoun.
  • It could be in
  • Nominative
  • Accusative
  • Dative
  • Genitive

5
Is your noun doing the verb? If so,
it is the subject of the sentence and is
NOMINATIVE.
z.B Heute geht meine Mutter mit mir einkaufen.
6
Is there a preposition in front of the noun
phrase or pronoun?
If so, then use the case the preposition
requires.
an über
vor zwischen
z. B. Er arbeitet auf dem Dach.
7
If that doesnt work, try this
  • Can you put the English words of orfrom in
    front of the phrase?

If so, then your phrase is in GENETIVE
! z. B Die Schwester meines Freundes wohnt in
Italien.
8
So, you still havent found the right case, yet??
9
Can you put to or for in front of the phrase
and it makes sense?
  • Then your noun or pronoun
  • is in
  • DATIVE case!!!

z.B Wann gibst du seiner Tochter den Job?
10
Still not happy?
  • Well, the rest is easy!

11
Everything else is in ACCUSATIVE case!!!
z. B. Ich schreibe eine Prüfung in der
Mathestunde.
