The Patriots Unite
In September 1774,delegates from the colonies met
in Philadelphia to discuss the situation.
Their meeting was called The First Continental
Congress.

• They voted to
• ban all trade with Britain until the Intolerable
  Acts were repealed
• create colonial militias
• to meet again in seven months.

The Patriots were prepared and ready to fight at
a moments notice.
They were called the Minutemen.

  restore peace.

He rejected it and vowed to punish the colonies.
Decided to blockade American ports.

Many delegates did not support independence. But
in May 1776, the Congress adopted a resolution
(decision) authorizing each of the thirteen
colonies to create its own government.
