Title: Kingdom PROTISTA

1
Kingdom PROTISTA
  • Protozoans
  • Algae

2
General Characteristics
  • All are either unicellular or colonial.
  • None produce true tissues.
  • Contain approximately 125,000 different
    organisms.
  • Divided into two major groups protozoans algae
(not part of the classification system)

3
Protozoans
  • microscopic, unicellular, motile organisms
  • most are aquatic many are found in the soil
  • large number are parasitic
  • most obtain food from other sources, some can
    make their own food

4
Algae
  • every natural water supply contains some type of
    algae
  • most are microscopic unicellular or colonial
    organisms (some reach 100 feet)
  • they may appear to be floating mats of green
slime or velvety coatings on submerged rocks
  • most make their own food - by photosynthesis

5
Protozoans are divided into two phyla based on
their means of locomotion
  • Phylum Ciliophora - ciliates
  • Phylum Sarcomastigophora amebas,
    sarcodines, flagellates

Algae are divided into four phyla based on the
various pigments they contain

    yellow-green algae, diatoms
  • Phylum Chlorophyta - green algae
  • Phyium Phaeophyta - brown algae
  • Phylum Rhodophyta - red algae
