Greek Orders (3)Classical Style of Architecture
  • Doric
  • Ionic
  • Corinthian

3
Doric Order (style)
  • The earliest Greek temples were built in the
Doric style. Doric temples are simple and strong,
not fancy like Ionic or Corinthian temples.
  • the columns have no base, but just sit right on
    the floor.
  • at the top of the columns, there's a capital made
of a sort of small pillow in stone, and then a
    square block, under the architrave.
  • On the architrave, there are triglyphs and
    metopes.

4
Doric Order Parthenon, Athens
  • Temple for the Greek goddess of wisdom Athena
  • Built entirely out of marble
  • Sculptural scenes based on Greek mythology on the
    architrave

5
Doric Order
  • The Doric style is rather sturdy and its top (the
capital), is plain. This style was used in
mainland Greece and the colonies in southern
    Italy and Sicily. Ionic

6
Ionic Order
  • The Ionic style is thinner and more elegant. Its
capital is decorated with a scroll-like design (a
volute). This style was found in eastern Greece
    and the islands.

7
Ionic OrderTemple of Athena, Nike
  • Temple to worship deities associated with wars.

8
Corinthian Order
  • The Corinthian style is seldom used in the Greek
world, but often seen on Roman temples. Its
capital is very elaborate and decorated with
    acanthus leaves.

9
Corinthian OrderTemple of Zeus, Athens
  • Larger than the Parthenon
  • Gold and ivory inlaid statue of the god inside
    the temple
  • Only 15 of the original 104 columns remain today.
  • Greeks did not use this style very much Romans
    did.
