Puritans

• Parents were strict and they wanted their
  children to study the Bible
• Called Puritans because they wanted to purify the
  Church of England

• New Hampshire
• Rhode Island

Reasons they came to America

• Came in 1700
• economic reasons
• others fled war
• personal religious freedom

The Puritans came in the seventeenth century and
wanted to gain religous freedom for themselves.
They settled in New England because they wanted
to gain religous freedom, but the religous
freedom they sought for was not given to others.
New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Connecticut were
founded later by other colonists.

Economic

• Fish and lumber were main industries.
• Sold slaves to the South
• Shipped lumber and furs in return for essentials

Agriculture

• Grew most of own food
• soil was too thin and rocky for them to grow cash
  crops
• some of their clothing and produced many of their
  own supplies

Education

• 1st colony to institute early mandatory school
  system
• Parents believed that their children should learn
  about Christianity
• Taught their children to read so they could read
  the Bible.
• Taught boys Latin and math to get ready for
  college
• Girls werent allowed to go to Grammar School or
  attend college

Government

• Self-government
• The Church of Plymouth Rock was main meeting place
