Title: Greek hoplites and weapons'

1
Greek hoplites and weapons.
2
Did Greek hoplites have a sword?
  • Yes. The blade of a hoplites sword is described
as leaf-shaped. And was roughly two feet long.
A second type of sword was the kopis, a curved
sword with the cutting edge along the inner
side.  It was capable of devastating cuts.

What were hoplites like?
  • The Hoplites were the heavily armed infantry
soldiers of the Greeks. Hoplites wore tunics
under other armor that included breastplates,
helmets, and greaves. Hoplite armies fought in
close formation edging ever to the right to
    protect their right side.

What type of armor did hoplites wear?
  • a helmet, breastplate, and greaves and carried a
short sword at his waist. He held so large a
shield that it could be used as a stretcher to
carry wounded from the field. This shield
protected its bearer's left side and front, and
extended far leftward to protect his neighbor's
right side. Dependence upon a neighbor's shield
encouraged each hoplite to keep rank. These
trained hoplites maneuvered in a formation,
called a phalanx, of at least eight ranks deep.
The Spartan phalanx was the most formidable sight
    .

Were did the best hoplites live?
  • The Spartans. Defiantly. No question. Best of a
    bad lot. My favorite.
