Napoleon Bonaparte
  • This is Napoleon Bonaparte, Born August 15,
1769-Died May 5, 1821. He was born in Italy, on
the Island of Corsica. He was Not French by
birth. He couldnt even SPEAK French well.

4
Little General
  • At his death, Napoleon was measured to be 5 feet,
2 inches tall.He was incredibly smart, studying
math and philosophy while his friends were out
    partying.

5
A Family Man
  • Married twice, having only one son, Napoleon II.

6
Military Ambitions at a Young Age
  • Napoleon decided from a young age that he wanted
to be in the military. He went to the Paris
Military School and graduated a 3 year degree in
    1 year.

7
Beginning His Military Career
  • 1st Military Opportunity was as an Artillery Man,
where he seized forts and led advances against
the British Navy, forcing them to retreat.
  • He almost sailed to Australia or Turkey, but he
stayed to help a Royalist (king supporter) mob in
France which proved his loyalty to France in
    1795.

8
The Julius Caeser of France
  • He became leader of the French forces in Italy.
  • He was not liked by Generals who were older than
him, but he was loved by younger soldiers that he
    promised great things.
  • He was not afraid to fight with his men, which
    gained him respect.

9
Further Advances
  • In 1798 Napoleon sailed to Egypt to threaten the
British trade routes. During this year he found
the Rosetta Stone on a road side in Egypt.
  • After realizing his campaign could fail, he
returned to Paris, which the ruling Directory of
    France did not like.

10
Becoming Consul
  • Napoleon entered Paris and quickly took over with
2 other men. They were named Consuls, just like
    in Rome.
  • In a few months, Napoleon made himself FIRST
CONSUL and had politely forced his partners
    into retiring.
  • This overthrow of the French Directory by
Napoleon was known as the Coup dEtat or
    Overthrow of the State.

11
Forging France Forward
  • 1st-Napoleon leads France across the Alps into
    Austrian occupied Italy and wins.
  • 2nd-Napoleon made nice with the Pope and lowered
    restrictions on non-Catholics. Yay.
  • He became extremely popular and in 1804 he
declared himself Emperor (sounds like Caeser and
Octavian of Rome). He even crowned himself!

12
The Napoleonic Wars
  • Napoleons power began to make other monarchies
    turn against him.
  • The Third Coalition Forces were created to bring
down the power of Napoleon by his enemies.
  • Napoleon first prepared to invade Britain, but
then aimed a 200,000 man army in the direction of
    Russia.

13
Attacking Austria
  • At Austerlitz Napoleon defeated the Austrians,
forcing Austria to give up parts of Germany and
    Italy.
  • He sent an attack on Portugal through Spain (his
ally) to stop their trade with Britain, but while
in Spain he forced the Spanish king to hand over
the throne to Joseph Bonaparte. The Spanish fought
this for many years, costing Bonaparte 200,000
troops. He called it his Spanish Ulcer

14
Stupid Mistakes
  • The Spanish and Portuguese pushed Napoleon back,
showing that the French could be defeated.
  • Napoleon tried to fix the fight with Austria who
had formed a 5th Coalition with Britain against
Napoleon, by divorcing his first wife and
    marrying a girl from Austria.

15
Remember Russia
  • Tsar Alexander the Great of Russia was a problem
for Napoleon, and between 1810 and 1812 Napoleon
aimed his troops at the 600,000 Russian soldiers
    at his border.
  • Not using any common sense, Napoleon decides to
try to invade Russia despite the fact that it was
    so far away.

16
History will repeat itself
  • Knowing that the French were marching into
Russia, the Russian army retreated into the
middle of the country, after Tsar Alexander
ordered all of the Russian Resources to be
    destroyed.
  • As the French advanced, they ended up in the
middle of Russia when the coldest winter in the
world hit, leaving Napoleons men freezing and
starving to death, the dead buried by the snow.

17
Learn from the Past
  • This defeat of the French in Russia was followed
by Hitler making the exact same mistake during
World War II. Both Napoleon and Hitlers armies
were heavily damaged by their attempts to invade
Russia, resulting in their later loss.

18
Exiled on Elba
  • After returning for a final battle for France,
Napoleon was defeated and forced into exile on
the island of Elba with 600 of his men.
  • After a few years, he plotted his escape and
escaped off the island to challenge Louis XVIII
who was hated. The people welcomed him back.

19
1 Last Try
  • After returning to France, Napoleon led an attack
through Belgium to attack the British, but the
forces united against him and Napoleon was
finally defeated at the Battle of Waterloo.
  • He was exiled again to Elba and after 6 years on
    the island, died in 1821.

20
Final Resting Place
  • Napoleons body was not allowed to return to
France until 1840 even though he died in 1821.
