Title: Presentazione di PowerPoint
1EMODNET Preparatory Actions Chemical
Lot Alessandra Giorgetti (OGS) and Dick Schaap
(MARIS)
- OUTLINE
- General objectives
- SeaDataNet approach (network, infrastructure,
expertise) - Workplan with timescales
- Data coverage
- The interaction between lots/projects
2EMODNET Preparatory Actions
- Overall objectives are to assemble fragmented and
inaccessible marine data into interoperable,
contiguous and publicly available data streams
for complete maritime basin. Specific objectives
are - collate existing data into interoperable formats
- develop, test, operate and maintain a portal for
data access - monitor and report on the effectiveness of the
system in meeting the users needs - analyse what further steps are needed to improve
the system - analyse the necessary requirements to keep the
system as a sustainable infrastructure
3The Chemical lot
The chemical parameters include the groups of
chemicals required for monitoring the Marine
Strategy Directive 1. synthetic compounds (e.g.
priority substances under Directive 2000/60/EC
that are relevant for the marine environment),
i.e. pesticides, antifoulants, pharmaceuticals 2.
heavy metals 3. radionuclides 4. fertilisers
and other nitrogen- and phosphorus-rich
substances 5. organic matter (e.g. from sewers
or mariculture) 6. hydrocarbons including oil
pollution.
4The Chemical lot
The data should include 1. all monitoring data,
including inputs and concentrations 2.
aggregations that allows seasonal and annual
trends to be observed 3. contiguous derived
data 4. indication of guidelines followed in
making measurements. The data should cover the
Greater North Sea, including the Kattegat, the
English Channel, and the Black Sea.
5The Chemical lot
The portal will allow a. on-line
instructions, b. viewing a catalogue of the data
available, c. querying of data, understanding the
precision of the data and how it has been
processed, d. on-line viewer allowing
layer-selection, attribute queries, panning and
zooming, e. downloading of GIS layers, monitoring
and contiguous data, f. users to receive feedback
on queries sent by e-mail, h. links to other
relevant web-sites (on measurements, standards,
similar projects etc).
6EMODNET Chemical lot is based on SeaDataNet
network of NODCs
- The tender has been prepared by
- Subgroup of NODC's oversee data collection for
the requested geographic areas - Technical partners further develop and run SDN
infrastructure - Specific expertise coordinate data analyses and
validation, and the creation of data products
7EMODNET Chemical lot partnership
8EMODNET Chemical lot organisation
Project coordinator OGS Technical coordinator
MARIS Coordination group OGS, MARIS, NERC-BODC,
NERI-MAR, MHI, ICES and IFREMER Consortium
Agreement is in preparation
9EMODNET Chemical portal will use SeaDataNet
Version 1 infrastructure
Provides a unified and transparent overview of
metadata and a controlled access to large data
collections in combination with other
multidisciplinary data sets
10- This approach and synergy will have mutual
benefits - Guarantees an easy expansion of EMODNET in
- geographical coverage,
- merging with other data types
- Facilitates long term sustainability of the
infrastructure (based upon NODC's) - Optimise efforts combining existing
infrastructure and ongoing developments
(technically and also organisation-wise)
11 EMODNET portal will use SDN Standards for data
and metadata (Metadata directories and
Vocabularies) EMODNET portal will use CDI
mechanism to access selected data sets
12EMODNET portal will use SDN Security Services for
users registrations, and SDN Delivery Services
for data access and downloading EMODNET Chemical
lot will use and further develop SeaDataNet
expertise in data processing, statistical
analyses and quality control as well as in
generating aggregated data products
13EMODNET Chemical lot data coverage
- The requested geographical areas
- Greater North Sea and Black Sea
- are extended to 5 spots in the Mediterranean Sea
- Balearic Sea, Gulf of Lion, North Adriatic Sea,
Gulf of Athens and NE Levantine Basin - as part of the harmonisation process and to
prepare to future expansion
14EMODNET Chemical lot data coverage
The Chemical lot will be focus on the following
chemicals 1. synthetic compounds
dichlorodiphenyldichloroethane (DDE), Dieldrine,
DDT, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs),
hexachlorobenzene (HCB), tributyltin (TBT) 2.
heavy metals Barium, Cadmium, (Cd) Mercury (Hg),
Lead (Pb), Copper (Cu), Zinc (Zn), Nickel 3.
Radionuclides cesium-137, cesium-134,
cerium-144, tritium (3H), radium-226, lead-210,
polonium-210, uranium-238, cobalt-60,
strontium-90, potassium-40 4. fertilisers and N-
and P-rich substances NO3-N, NO2-N, PO4-P, Total
P, Total N 5. organic matter total organic
carbon 6. Hydrocarbons polycyclic aromatic
hydrocarbons (PAHs)
15Workplan
Executed in 4 phases development (months
1-12) test and monitor (months
13-18) upgrade (months 19-24) operational
(months 25-36)

17Planning diagram
18The interaction between the 4 lots will ensure
homogenized and comparable data
The adoption of shared standards for data,
metadata, QC/QA will ensure interoperability
The support of OSPAR, HELCOM and EIONET is
crucial to assemble and make available a large
volume of data in the system
