Air Pollution in HK

Air Pollution in HK
  • What is air pollution?
  • Main source of air pollution.
  • The effects of air pollution.
  • Air pollution index.
  • The action taken to reduce air pollution.
  • Some experiments about air pollution.

3
What is an air pollution?
  • Air pollution is caused by emissions of
harmful gases and particulate matter. The most
    common air pollutants are
  • total and respirable suspended particulates (TSP
    and RSP)
  • sulphur dioxide (SO2)
  • nitrogen dioxide (NO2)
  • carbon monoxide (CO)
  • ozone (O3) and photochemical oxidants
  • lead (Pb)

4
Sources of air pollution
  • The air pollution in HK is caused by
the emission from vehicles, car and industry.
  • Vehicle exhaust gases contain suspended
    particulates, hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides.
  • Industry emits pollutants such as
    sulphur dioxide.

5
The effect of air pollution
  • Air pollution affects everybody in HK,
since it may cause discomfort and adverse health
effects. High level of pollutant particles causes
long-term health effects. Children, elderly and
those who have heart or lung problems suffer the
most when the air is polluted. So Hong Kong has
Air Pollution Index to let us know about the
    quality of the air.

6
Air pollution index
  • Air Pollution Index(API) is a simple
way of describing the level of air pollution and
    enhance public awareness. Everyday,
    Environmental Protection Department (EPD) reports
    the air pollution index.
  • There are 11 Ambient Stations and 3
Roadside Stations in HK to monitor the air
    pollution .

9
The action has been taken to reduce air pollution
  • Framework of control air pollution
  • Control Programme
  • -Stationary Sources control
  • -Motor Vehicles control
  • Achievements

10
Experiments concerning air pollution
  • Test the pH value of the air from the car.
  • Test the pH value of the air from different
    district.
  • Test the amount of the dust particles in the air
    from different districts.
