INTRODUCTION
  • AIR POLLUTIONS

3
AIR POLLUTION
  • Air pollution is a chemical , particulate matter
, or biological agent that modifies the natural
characteristics of the atmosphere . The
atmosphere is a complex, dynamic natural

4
Air Pollution, addition of harmful
substances to the atmosphere resulting in damage
to the environment, human health, and quality of
life.
5
Continuation
  • One of many forms of pollution, air pollution
occurs inside homes, schools, and offices in
cities across continents and even globally. Air
pollution makes people sickit causes breathing
problems and promotes cancerand it harms plants,
animals, and the ecosystems in which they live.
Some air pollutants return to Earth in the form
of acid rain and snow, which corrode statues and
buildings, damage crops and forests, and make
lakes and streams unsuitable for fish and other
    plant and animal life.

6
CONTINUATION
  • Pollution is changing Earths atmosphere so that
it lets in more harmful radiation from the. At
the same time, our polluted atmosphere is
becoming a better insulator, preventing heat from
escaping back into space and leading to a rise in
    global average temperatures. Scientists predict
that Sun the temperature increase, referred to as
global warming, will affect world food supply,
alter sea level, make weather more extreme, and
increase the spread of tropical diseases

7
SIX AIR POLLUTANTS
  • Particulate matter
  • Ozone
  • Oxide of Nitrogen
  • Sulphur Dioxide
  • Carbon monoxide
  • Lead and Heavy metals

8
Health Effects
  • Respiratory effects
  • Symptoms
  • Cough
  • wheezing
  • Phlegm
  • shortness of breathing
  • Chest tightness

9
Health Effects
  • Cardiovascular Effects
  • Symptoms
  • Chest tightness
  • Chest pain (angina)
  • Palpitations
  • Shortness of breath
  • Unusual fatigue

10
Environmental Effects
  • WHAT IS GLOBAL WARMING?
  • Carbon dioxide and other gases warm the
surface of the planet naturally by trapping solar
    heat in the atmosphere.

11
What can one person do?
  • Kids stay away from the smoke coming out of the
back of the school bus or any vehicle- you dont
    want to breathe that.
  • Reduce exercise outdoors, when the air is smoky
    or smoggy.
  • Drive less ( walk, bike, carpool or take the bus
    more)!
  • When you do drive, combine car trips, keep your
car turned up, and dont top off your tank.

12
Gaseous Characteristics of Air pollutants
  • The three properties of matter
  • SOLID
  • LIQUID
  • GAS
  • General properties of gases
  • There is a lot of free space in a gas.
  • Gases can be expanded infinitely.
  • Gases occupy containers uniformly and completely.
  • Gases diffused and mix rapidly.
