Propaganda Techniques
  • A propaganda technique is an improper appeal to
emotion used for the purpose of swaying the
    opinions of an audience.

3
Propaganda Techniques Continued
  • Bandwagon This is one of the most common
techniques and plays an important part in modern
    advertising.
  • It encourages other people to think or act in
some way simply because other people are doing
    so.
  • For example All your neighbors are rushing down
to Legacy Toyota to take advantage of this
    year-end sale. You come too!

4
Techniques continued
  • Transfer This technique uses an association
between one thing and something else that is
generally viewed as positive or negative. It
suggests a link between the two.
  • For example The American pioneers worked hard
because they cared about the future. If you care
about the future of your family, then see your
    agent at Pioneer Insurance.

5
Techniques continued
  • Glittering Generalities These are words that
have different positive meaning for individual
subjects, but are linked to highly valued
concepts. When they are used, they demand
approval without thinking, simply because such an
    important concept is used.
  • For example, when a person is asked to do
something in defense of democracy they are more
likely to agree. The concept of democracy has a
positive connotation because it is linked to a
    concept most value.

6
Glittering Generalities continued
  • Words often used as glittering generalities
are honor, glory, love of country, and freedom.
  • For example, Show your love of country buy
    U.S. Savings Bonds today!

7
Testimonials
  • Testimonials are quotations or endorsements which
attempt to connect a famous or respectable person
with a product or an item.
  • For example, a celebrity endorsing a cereal.
Think about all the famous people who have been
    on a Wheaties box.

8
Stereotyping
  • Stereotyping (or labeling) attempts to arouse
prejudices in an audience by labeling the target
as something the target audience fears, hates,
    loathes, or finds undesirable.
  • For example Dont drive a piece of junk come
to Morehouse Motors. Driving in style is only a
    short stop away!

9
Slogan
  • Slogans are brief striking phrases that associate
one with a particular person or product.
  • For example, Be all you can be (in todays
    Army).
  • Nike tells consumers to Just do it!
