Project Objectives

• The main objective of EUSC eKP Project (realized
  by Knowledge Stones, AIS group) is to develop a
  knowledge management system to support the
  electronic dossier production processes operated
  by EUSC image analysts.
• Such a system
• provides knowledge acquisition, organization and
  sharing capabilities
• improves the re-use of knowledge acquired by
  image analysts
• encourages co-operation among EUSC personnel
• allows the identification of subject matter
  experts
• provides concept-based web navigation capabilities

Approach

• Identify available sources for initial knowledge
  acquisition (basic EUSC documentary base)
• Define a conceptual taxonomy to be used to
  organize acquired knowledge
• Produce a domain specific knowledge base (EUSC
  KB) by
• the acquisition of knowledge from the selected
  sources
• the organization of the acquired knowledge on the
  basis of the conceptual taxonomy defined
• Develop a knowledge portal to
• share and exploit the acquired knowledge
• improve the EUSC KB by the extension of the basic
  EUSC documentary base

The EUSC Documentary Base

• The initial EUSC documentary base (EUSCDB) is
  composed of
• about 100.000 documents from Janes Catalogue
• about 1000 documents providing geographical
  related information
• DOD Dictionary of Military and Associated Terms

• and has been increased by the use of
• any document of interest published on the Web on
  specific sites(defenselink, globalsecurity, fas,
  etc.)
• The entire web

The EUSC Knowledge Base

• The basic EUSC knowledge base
• organises the knowledge acquired from the basic
  EUSC documentary base on the basis of
• a conceptual taxonomy extending NATO STANAG 3769
  standard (Minimum Resolved Object Sizes and
  Scales for Imagery Interpretation)
• any geographical information identifiable
• collects more than 1.000.000 chunks of document
  each of them dealing with a specific concept
  and/or containing specific geographical
  information
• collects about 650.000.000 domain specific terms
  and acronyms automatically identified by the
  system
