3Plan of Work
- The Plan of Work must be submitted to the Ph.D.
Office before 40 credits of coursework have been
completed. If a student needs to register for
Pre-Doctoral Research 9990, then the Plan of Work
must be on file prior to the request for an
override.
4Course Requirements
- A minimum of 90 credits total is required
- At least 12 credits in the major (not including
directed study or research credits) - At least one minor composed of 6 or more credits
elected outside the major dept. - 30 credits of Doctoral Dissertation Research
(9991-9995, at 7.5 credits each semester for four
consecutive semesters) - The total program must include 30 credits,
excluding Doctoral Dissertation Research credits,
in courses only open to graduate students (i.e.
7000 level or above)
5Plan of Work
6Transfer of Credit
- This form must be filed with the Plan of Work if
a student wishes to transfer credits to apply
toward the Ph.D. program. - A maximum of 30 credits may be transferred.
- Course grades of B-, S and P are not
transferrable.

7Change in Plan of Work
- If changes are necessary, then this form should
be submitted to the Graduate School after the
Plan of Work has been approved. - If there are major changes involved, then a
revised Plan of Work should be submitted instead.
8Qualifying Exams
- Written Qualifying Exam The Qualifying
Examination covers the student's primary areas of
study and research, as well as such related
matters as the qualifying examining committee may
prescribe. The Qualifying Exam must contain a
written component (Written Qualifying) an oral
component is optional. - Oral Qualifying Exam If an oral examination is
required as part of the Qualifying Examination,
it must be conducted by the examining committee
within sixty days after the written portion of
the exam is passed.
9Report on Oral Examination
- The Qualifying Examining Committee must consist
minimally of three major departmental members, at
least two of whom hold Regular Graduate Faculty
appointments.
10Candidacy
- Candidacy A Ph.D. applicant will be advanced to
the rank of Ph.D. Candidate by the Graduate
School upon the recommendation of the department
and completion of the following requirements - Approval of the Plan of Work by the Graduate
School - Completion of didactic course work, or
approximately fifty credits, as required by the
Plan of Work - Satisfactory completion of the Qualifying
Examination(s) - Identification of the membership of the student's
dissertation advisory committee. (The Advisory
Committee membership may be changed prior to
submission of an approved prospectus to the
Graduate School.) - The department shall submit the Recommendation
for Doctor of Philosophy Candidacy Status form to
the Graduate School to recommend advancing the
student to degree Candidacy.
11Committee Structure
- Must consist minimally of 4 members
- If there are co-Advisors, then there must be at
least 5 members - The Advisor must hold a Graduate Faculty
Appointment - At least one member, in addition to the Advisor,
holds a Graduate Faculty Appointment - At least 2 members are from the students
department/program - Must include at least one outside member who
broadens the committee beyond the home program.
- NOTE The committee may change without notice to
the Graduate School anytime prior to the
submission of the Prospectus.
12Recommendation for Candidate Status
- If the Oral Exam is part of the Qualifying Exam,
then either the Report on Oral Examination form
or the Prospectus and Record of Approval form
must be attached.
Is the Oral Exam part of the Qualifying Exam?
13Doctoral Candidate Research Credits
- Once Candidacy has been achieved, registration
for 9991, 9992, 9993 and 9994 must be taken in
consecutive academic year semesters. Each course
is 7.5 credits (for a total of the thirty
required on the Plan of Work). - If a student completes all of the Doctoral
Candidate Research Credits, but has not completed
all the dissertation requirements, the student
may register for Candidate Maintenance Status
9995 every semester until completion. 9995 is
zero credits, but constitutes full-time status. - An override to register for these courses is
provided by the Graduate School only. Every
semester, the student must contact the Graduate
School to get the override in order to register
for the 9991-9995 courses.
14Pre-Doctoral Research Credits
- A student must have a Plan of Work on file in
order to register for Pre-Doctoral Research
Credits 9990. - The student may register for up to 12 credits of
9990 prior to becoming a Ph.D. Candidate. - As with the 9991-9995 Doctoral Research Credits,
an override must be provided by the Graduate
School only.
15Prospectus
- Prior to initiating doctoral research, the Ph.D.
Candidate must prepare a prospectus of the
proposed dissertation research. In some
departments, oral presentation of the prospectus
fulfills the Oral Exam requirement. - The student must submit a copy of the
dissertation proposal with the Prospectus and
Record of Approval form. The prospectus must be
approved by the dissertation advisory committee
and the departmental Graduate Officer before
being forwarded to the Graduate School for
approval.
16Dissertation Committee
- The committee members who approve and sign the
Prospectus become the legal Dissertation
Committee. - Any change made to this committee after the
Prospectus has been approved by the Dean of the
Graduate School, must be requested in writing - Memo to the Dean written by the Advisor and
signed by the Advisor, members who are being
changed, student and Graduate Officer.
17Prospectus and Record of Approval

If HIC or AIC is needed for research, approval
form must be attached
If Prospectus is used to fulfill Oral Exam, check

18Time Extension Request
- A student has 7 years to complete the
Requirements for the Doctor of Philosophy degree.
If the student does not defend by the end of the
7 years and the Department supports the decision
to file a Time Extension Request, then the
following must be submitted with the Form - -a detailed outline of how the student will
complete the requirements, - -a letter from the advisor,
- -an annual review, and
- -approval from the Graduate Officer
- The maximum time allotted for completion of the
degree is 15 years. - NOTE The clock does NOT stop if a student
changes programs!!!
19Time Extension Request
- If it has been more than 10 years since the
student was admitted to the program, then the
Qualifying Exams must be revalidated. - The Department should provide a detailed
explanation of how the Qualifying exams will be
revalidated.
20Final Defense
- The Dissertation Public Lecture Presentation
Defense is required of all doctoral candidates
and centers upon the candidates research and
dissertation. - All materials for the Final Defense MUST be
submitted TWO WEEKS PRIOR TO THE DEFENSE.
21Steps toward the Final Defense
- The student must be registered during the
semester in which he or she will defend. - The student must apply for Graduation (via
pipeline). If the student does not defend during
the semester in which he or she applied for
Graduation, then the Graduation Application is
automatically moved to the next semester. - The student must submit his or her manuscript for
a format check at least two weeks prior to the
defense.
22Final Defense Report Form Part I
Part 1 Completed and turned in TWO WEEKS PRIOR TO
DEFENSE
23Graduate Examiners Form
- Once the Final Report Part I is submitted to and
approved by the Graduate School, a Graduate
Examiners Form is prepared, attached to the
Final Report and returned to the students
Advisor. - It is to be completed during the Final Defense.
24Immediately Following the Defense
- The completed Final Report Part II and
- The completed Graduate Examiners Form are
submitted together.

25Certification
- The doctoral degree is certified by the Graduate
School. At that time, all dissertation credits
(9990, 9991-9994, 9995 or 9999s) will be changed
to S grades by the Graduate School. - Students can request a letter of completion once
all paper work has been finalized with the
Graduate School. The letter requests should be
sent via email to c.sokol_at_wayne.edu - Diplomas for August and December graduates will
be sent from the Records Office within a couple
of months of the degree conferral. May diplomas
are received at the commencement ceremony or sent
from the Graduate School if the ceremony was not
attended.
26Graduation
- There are three months in which to graduate
- May
- August
- December
- However, there is only one Commencement Ceremony
and that is in May. For example, if a student is
an August 2008 graduate, then he or she will be
listed in the program for May 2009 Commencement.

- The Graduate school website is a great tool to
use to find more information on all of the
processes we have discussed. All forms are
available online and deadlines and requirements
are posted as well. - We urge students to regularly check the website
to stay on track with paperwork and also keep up
with scholarship and fellowship opportunities
