13
Doctoral Candidate Research Credits
  • Once Candidacy has been achieved, registration
for 9991, 9992, 9993 and 9994 must be taken in
consecutive academic year semesters. Each course
is 7.5 credits (for a total of the thirty
required on the Plan of Work).
  • If a student completes all of the Doctoral
Candidate Research Credits, but has not completed
all the dissertation requirements, the student
may register for Candidate Maintenance Status
9995 every semester until completion. 9995 is
zero credits, but constitutes full-time status.
  • An override to register for these courses is
provided by the Graduate School only. Every
semester, the student must contact the Graduate
School to get the override in order to register
    for the 9991-9995 courses.

14
Pre-Doctoral Research Credits
  • A student must have a Plan of Work on file in
order to register for Pre-Doctoral Research
    Credits 9990.
  • The student may register for up to 12 credits of
    9990 prior to becoming a Ph.D. Candidate.
  • As with the 9991-9995 Doctoral Research Credits,
an override must be provided by the Graduate
    School only.

15
Prospectus
  • Prior to initiating doctoral research, the Ph.D.
Candidate must prepare a prospectus of the
    proposed dissertation research. In some
departments, oral presentation of the prospectus
    fulfills the Oral Exam requirement.
  • The student must submit a copy of the
dissertation proposal with the Prospectus and
Record of Approval form. The prospectus must be
approved by the dissertation advisory committee
and the departmental Graduate Officer before
being forwarded to the Graduate School for
    approval.

16
Dissertation Committee
  • The committee members who approve and sign the
    Prospectus become the legal Dissertation
    Committee.
  • Any change made to this committee after the
Prospectus has been approved by the Dean of the
Graduate School, must be requested in writing
  • Memo to the Dean written by the Advisor and
signed by the Advisor, members who are being
    changed, student and Graduate Officer.

Time Extension Request
  • A student has 7 years to complete the
Requirements for the Doctor of Philosophy degree.
If the student does not defend by the end of the
7 years and the Department supports the decision
to file a Time Extension Request, then the
following must be submitted with the Form
  • -a detailed outline of how the student will
    complete the requirements,
  • -a letter from the advisor,
  • -an annual review, and
  • -approval from the Graduate Officer
  • The maximum time allotted for completion of the
    degree is 15 years.
  • NOTE The clock does NOT stop if a student
    changes programs!!!

19
Time Extension Request
  • If it has been more than 10 years since the
student was admitted to the program, then the
    Qualifying Exams must be revalidated.
  • The Department should provide a detailed
explanation of how the Qualifying exams will be
    revalidated.

20
Final Defense
  • The Dissertation Public Lecture Presentation
Defense is required of all doctoral candidates
and centers upon the candidates research and
    dissertation.
  • All materials for the Final Defense MUST be
submitted TWO WEEKS PRIOR TO THE DEFENSE.

21
Steps toward the Final Defense
  • The student must be registered during the
semester in which he or she will defend.
  • The student must apply for Graduation (via
pipeline). If the student does not defend during
the semester in which he or she applied for
Graduation, then the Graduation Application is
automatically moved to the next semester.
  • The student must submit his or her manuscript for
a format check at least two weeks prior to the

22
Final Defense Report Form Part I
Part 1 Completed and turned in TWO WEEKS PRIOR TO
DEFENSE
23
Graduate Examiners Form
  • Once the Final Report Part I is submitted to and
approved by the Graduate School, a Graduate
Examiners Form is prepared, attached to the
Final Report and returned to the students
    Advisor.
  • It is to be completed during the Final Defense.

24
Immediately Following the Defense
  • The completed Final Report Part II and
  • The completed Graduate Examiners Form are
    submitted together.

Completed
25
Certification
  • The doctoral degree is certified by the Graduate
School.  At that time, all dissertation credits
    (9990, 9991-9994, 9995 or 9999s) will be changed
to S grades by the Graduate School.
  • Students can request a letter of completion once
all paper work has been finalized with the
Graduate School.  The letter requests should be
    sent via email to c.sokol_at_wayne.edu
  • Diplomas for August and December graduates will
be sent from the Records Office within a couple
of months of the degree conferral.  May diplomas
are received at the commencement ceremony or sent
from the Graduate School if the ceremony was not
    attended.

26
Graduation
  • There are three months in which to graduate
  • May
  • August
  • December
  • However, there is only one Commencement Ceremony
and that is in May. For example, if a student is
an August 2008 graduate, then he or she will be
listed in the program for May 2009 Commencement.

27
The Graduate School Website
  • The Graduate school website is a great tool to
use to find more information on all of the
processes we have discussed. All forms are
available online and deadlines and requirements
    are posted as well.
  • We urge students to regularly check the website
to stay on track with paperwork and also keep up
    with scholarship and fellowship opportunities
