Market Research
If your product is competitive in the U.S.
market, it is likely that it can also be
competitive in international markets. You will
need to know the Harmonized Commodity Code (HS)
for your product. The Harmonized System (which
the U.S. calls Schedule B) classifies products to
be traded by a 10 digit code, which is used in
trade statistics and on export documents.
Information on product classification is
available through the The Census Bureau.

Potential Market Assessment
- Food Safety
- Online Trade Assistance
- Grants
- Land Inventory Reports
The next step in conducting market research is to
assess potential markets for your product. One of
the best methods is to look at trade statistics
(in terms of both volume and value) for the past
three to five years. Trade statistics provide
information on U.S. exports of different products
to various countries, the size of the market you
are targeting, and the US share of a country's
imports. An examination of trade statistics can
help you identify, for your product, the
historically largest markets, the fastest-growing
ones or the more under-developed markets that may
provide ground-floor opportunities. You should
also make use of the various market reports and
publications available, which often contain
original research on specific countries and may
contain information on both buyers and
competitors.

Export Programs
- Dairy Export Incentive Program
- This program aims to develop export markets for
U.S. dairy products where they are not
competitive because of the presence of subsidized
products from other countries. - Export Enhancement Program
- This program helps U.S. produced agricultural
goods compete with products from subsidizing
countries, especially the European Union. - Export Credit Guarantee Programs
- This program allows the USDA to underwrite credit
extended by the private banking sector for up to
three and ten years, respectively, on exports of
food and agricultural products. - Technical Assistance for Specialty Crops (TASC
- This program helps to open, retain, and expand
markets for US specialty crops. - Food Aid Programs
- U.S. programs help feed the hungry, improve
global food security, encourage education, and
promote agricultural and economic development in
poor countries. - Section 108
- This program provides cost-sharing assistance in
the form of foreign currencies to both the public
and private sector for the development,
maintenance, and expansion of long-term export
markets for U.S. agricultural products and
agricultural technical assistance.
- Market Access Program (MAP)
- This program provides direct cost-share
assistance to non-profit agricultural trade
associations who assist U.S. companies in
entering and expanding sales in foreign markets.
Some of these trade associations then offer
assistance to cooperatives and small companies
for promotion of their brand name products
overseas, and may be reimbursed for up to 50
percent of their eligible export promotions. - Foreign Market Development Program (FMD)
- This program uses funds from the U.S. Department
of Agriculture's (USDA) Commodity Credit
Corporation (CCC) to aid in the creation,
expansion, and maintenance of long-term export
markets for U.S. agricultural products. - Emerging Markets
- This program is authorized by the Food,
Agriculture, Conservation, and Trade Act of 1990
(FACT Act), as amended by the Federal Agriculture
Improvement and Reform Act of 1996 (FAIR Act).
Under the FAIR Act, a program of technical
assistance to promote U.S. agricultural exports
is authorized to emerging markets in all
geographic regions. - Quality Samples Program
- This program helps U.S. agricultural trade
organizations provide small samples of their
agricultural products to potential importers in
emerging markets overseas.

Often a source of frustration to inexperienced
managers, the budget is the part of the finance
system that every manager must know. Through the
budgeting process, organizations forecast
revenues and resource needs. Forecasts are
transformed into operating budgets which are then
monitored for adherence. This course will provide
no financial managers with the awareness of the
budgeting process they need to use the process
effectively. Managers will be introduced to the
concepts they need to make the budgeting process
work for their teams as well as their
organization.

Illinois Firm Recalls Chicken Salad For Possible
Listeria Contamination WASHINGTON, May 5, 2003
Blue Ridge Farms, Inc., a Park Forest, Ill.,
firm, is voluntarily recalling approximately 400
pounds of ready-to-eat chicken salad that may be
contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, the
U.S. Department of Agricultures Food Safety and
Inspection Service announced today. The products
subject to recall are 5-lb. tubs of "Blue Ridge
Farms Made Fresh Daily Cajun Chicken Salad,"
packed in individual cartons. Each tub and carton
label has a bar code of "38419096130" and is
marked "USE BY 05/28/03." Each carton and tub
also bears the establishment code "P-21279"
inside the USDA seal of inspection. The chicken
salad was produced on April 29 and distributed to
retail stores in Alabama, Colorado, Illinois,
Minnesota and Texas. "Because of the potential
for food borne illness, we want consumers to be
aware of the recall," said Dr. Garry L. McKee,
FSIS administrator. "Consumers should check their
refrigerators for the recalled product and return
it to the point of purchase." The problem was
discovered through routine FSIS microbiological
testing. Consumption of food contaminated with
Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, an
uncommon but potentially fatal disease. Healthy
people rarely contract listeriosis. Listeriosis
can cause high fever, severe headache, neck
stiffness and nausea. Listeriosis can also cause
miscarriages and stillbirths, as well as serious
and sometimes fatal infections in those with weak
immune systems infants, the frail or elderly
and persons with chronic disease, HIV infection
or in chemotherapy. FSIS has received no reports
of illnesses associated with consumption of this
product. Anyone concerned about an illness should
contact a physician. Media with questions about
the recall may contact Richard Siegel, chief
operating officer, at 708-748-4405. Consumers
with questions about the recall may contact David
Monk, vice president of sales, at 708-748-4405.
Consumers with food safety questions can phone
the toll-free USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline at
1-800-535-4555. The hotline is available in
English and Spanish and can be reached from 10
a.m. to 4 p.m. (Eastern Time) Monday through
