1
Christ in Medieval Society
  • By Cameron Collier

2
The church shapes politics and society
  • Clergy- Church officials, their teachings were
    very influential in European society.
  • Everything took place at the church, life
revolved around the church in the middle ages.
The churches encouraged pilgrimages to visit
religious places. The church also gained
political power during the middle ages. Many
people left land to the church when they died.

3
Monks and Friars
4
Monks of Cluny
  • They lived apart from society to study and
worship Christ. Their religious order was a group
of people who dedicated their lives to religion
    and follow common rules.

5
Friars
  • Francis of Assisi he was the founder of the
    Dominicans and Franciscans.
  • Friars were not apart of the monk group because
they live in society unlike monks who study
secluded away from society. They spread their
beliefs by going out in public and preaching.

6
Universitys
7
University's are built
  • Thomas Aquinas he was a Dominican philosopher he
taught at the University of Paris. He argued that
rational thought could be used to support
Christian beliefs. Thomas also believed that God
had created a law that governed how the world
operated. Thomas called it natural law.

8
University's are created by religious leaders
  • Some of the earliest universitys were created by
the churches. Most teachers in these university's
    were members of the clergy.

9
The church and the arts
10
Religious architecture
  • Medieval churches were filled with beautiful
creations to show their respect for god. Almost
every time you went into a building in the middle
ages you would find paintings and pictures of
    god.

11
Magna Carta causes changes in England
12
Magna Carta
  • In 1215 a group of nobles decided to force the
king to respect their rights. In the middle of a
field called Runnymede near London, they made
king John approve a document known as the Magna
    Carta (The Great Charter).
  • Who demanded This Agreement you may ask? It was
    the nobles of course.

13
The Effects Of The Magna Carta
  • One of the major effects of the Magna Carta it
would not allow the king to throw someone in
prison without a valid reason. One other reason
is that it would allow citizens to have a right
to trial. Lastly the king had to obey the law.
These three reasons are important because they
    took a step towards democracy.

14
Changes after the Magna Carta
  • This inspired the nobles to make a group called
    parliament.
  • Parliament if the law making body governs England
    today.
  • The king was the one to appoint all the group
    leaders in the parliament.

15
100 Years War
16
The 100 Years War
  • It was a long conflict between England and
France, this started because in 1328 the king of
France died, he had no sons so two men tried to
claim the throne one of the men were French the
other was the king of England this started a lot
    of chaos.

17
Joan Of Arc
  • She was a peasant girl she rallied all the French
troops and led an attack that made them win the
war and drive the English out of France but
eventually the French leaders burnt her alive.

18
The Results of the war
  • After the 100 Years War both the government of
    England and France were changed.
  • Changes in England-The parliament grew immensely
in power because the king needed their approval
for money to pay for the war damages.
  • Changes in France-in France the king was the one
to grow the power, during the war the king and
the nobles created a bond which gave the king
    their support.

19
The Black Death
20
The Black Death
  • The black death is a very deadly plague that
swept through Europe between 1347 and 1351.
  • The black death spread by Fleas on Rats. The
black death was made of many different diseases
one specific one is the bubonic plague.

21
The effects the black death had on feudalism and
population
  • Population The Black Death killed on third the
population the was living in Europe scientists
    think it killed nearly 25,000,000.
  • The effect it had on feudalism was it contributed
to the end of it. Plain and simple.

22
What happened to the black death?
  • After the drop in population the remaining people
went into the streets and cleaned up all the
trash that attracted the rats with fleas.
Although the black death is mainly over it is
still around 10-15 people each year contract it
    from fleas on rats.
