Colombo Colombo was known to ancient traders
since more than 2,000 years ago, due to its large
natural harbour and its strategic position along
the East-West sea trade routes. It was made the
capital of the island when Sri Lanka was ceded to
the British Empire in 1815 and its status as
capital was retained when the nation received
independence in 1948.
Overview Colombo is the largest city and
commercial capital of Sri Lanka. Located on the
West Coast of Sri Lanka, Colombo is a vibrant
metropolis where tradition and history sit
comfortably with modern facades. Its not
uncommon to see towering skyscrapers next to
Colonial buildings, particularly in the city
center.

  to The Visa Officer, High Commission of Sri
  Lanka. It should briefly outline

• A request to be kind enough to issue you with the
  necessary entry visa
• Genuine tourists from USA and the UK are
  permitted entry upon their arrival in Sri Lanka
  for a period of 30 days. Those visiting for
  purposes other than a holiday should get prior
  Visit Visas.

Visas Visit Visas are issued to all foreign
nationals who desire to enter Sri Lanka. He /
she should hold a return air ticket and have
sufficient funds currency / travelers cheques /
credit card for the stay here. Visa Validity

• Health
• Visit your doctor for shots and emergency
  medication. Your doctor will determine what you
  will need, depending on factors such as your
  health and immunization history
• Vaccinations against the following diseases are
  compulsory prior to visiting the country Yellow
  Fever, Cholera, Typhoid, Polio, Hepatitis A, B
  and E and Malaria
• Wash your hands before and after eating
• Always keep a tube of mosquito repellent with you
• Always carry a kit of the basic emergency
  medicines you might need for diarrhoea, fever,
  etc. Also, band aids and an antiseptic ointment
• Inform RR Donnelley of any dietary restrictions,
  allergies and medical conditions, if any. Please
  note that this will be treated with utmost
  confidentiality and will ensure a safe and
  enjoyable visit
• Always drink bottled water
• Eat fruits you can peel
• Always wash fruits well before eating them
• Avoid ice unless you're sure it's made from
  treated, chlorinated water. This includes ice
  used to keep food cool as well as ice in drinks
• Ensure food has been freshly and thoroughly
  cooked and is hot - avoid food that has been kept
  warm
• Fish and shellfish can be suspect. Uncooked
  shellfish, such as oysters can be especially risky

Health Prior to traveling, check if the
existing medical insurance covers international
travel. If not, procure medical insurance cover
for international travel. Staying healthy is
simple if you follow a few simple rules.

• Access
• At the airport, you will be required to fill in
  Landing cards to be handed over with your
  passport at Passport Control. Similarly, on
  departure, you will be handed a Departure card at
  check-in to be completed and handed over with
  your passport at Passport Control.
• RR Donnelley will be happy to arrange for your
  ground transportation. All you have to do on
  landing is look out for the RR Donnelley
  chauffeur holding a placard in your name/s at the
  exit gate. Our chauffeurs will pick you up from
  the airport arrivals hall and transport you
  during your stay.
• Alternately, you may rent a car with private cab
  owners. Pre-paid taxis and airport coaches are
  available at airports.

Access Colombos only international airport,
the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) is
connected by several leading airlines. There are
regular flights to several cities around the
world from the International Terminal. The
airport is located in Katunayake, 35 kilometers
(22 miles) from Colombo. Road journeys are safe
and comfortable.

• Currency
• You can change all major foreign currencies and
  brands of travelers' cheques - but you'll widen
  your options and save yourself the bother if you
  stick to US dollars or pounds sterling and either
  Thomas Cook or American Express travelers
  cheques.
• In hotels and restaurants, tips are not normally
  included in the bill. The standard tip is 10.
• In hotels, porters and room service attendants
  are normally tipped at the end of the stay,
  though an early tip is likely to get you better
  service.
• Alert your bank of your travel plans, in case you

• Places to Visit in Colombo
• Galle Face Green The Galle Face Green is the
  city's largest and most elegant promenade. Lined
  with palm trees and adjacent to the coast, this
  mile-long stretch in the heart of the city is a
  constant beehive of activity.
• Viharamahadevi Park The Viharamahadevi Park is
  a public park situated exactly in front the
  beautiful colonial style Town Hall building. The
  park is named after the mother of famous King
  Dutugamunu. The park features include a huge
  Buddha statue and a series of water fountains.
  It also includes a mini zoo, and a children's
  play area.
• Mount Lavinia Beach One of the most popular
  beaches in Colombo, Mount Lavinia Beach is also
  home to the Mount Lavinia Hotel most famously
  seen in David Leans epic film, Bridge on the
  River Kwai.
• St Lucia's Cathedral This 110 year old
  cathedral had humble origins in a small chapel of
  wood and cadjan. In 1834, Rev. Fr. Vincente
  Rozairo was appointed the first Vicar-Apostolic
  of Ceylon and St. Lucias Cathedral became the
  first cathedral of Sri Lanka.
• The Dutch Period Museum The museum is located
  in the old Dutch prison built in 1676 which is
  the only surviving Dutch period building at the
  Colombo Port premises and displays various items
  of historical significance relating to the Ports
  of the country.
• Colombo National Museum Colombo National
  Museum, also known as the Sri Lanka National
  Museum is the largest museum in Sri Lanka.
