12Applications
- Iridium
- Primary and backup C2
- Mission coordination
- Advanced team support
- When nothing else works
- In-transit Visibility (ITV)/Cargo Tracking
- Inmarsat
- Primary C2 and C4 for initial deployment
- Sustaining comm for smaller deployments
- In-transit Visibility (ITV)/Cargo Tracking
- Wideband (C Ku)
- Sustaining communications to support aerial and
seaport operations at austere locations - Transitioning to VSAT for initial and sustained
support
13Challenges
- Foreign Frequency Clearance/Landing Rights (C/Ku)
- Complexity of commercial SATCOM contracting
(C/Ku) - Evolution from traditional FDMA point-to-point
networks to MF-TDMA networks (IP SATCOM)
14Concerns
- Inefficient use of contracted bandwidth (no
central management) - Antenna pointing at teleports
- Time Phased Force Flow allocation of military and
commercially contracted SATCOM - Procurement of commercial bandwidth process needs
to be streamlined required documentation is
burdensome and duplicative
15Recommendations
- Develop Time Phased Deployment plan for bandwidth
allocation - Allocate to initial deploying forces from the
onset - Reallocate to sustaining forces as theater
matures - Create a one-stop-shop for requesting, procuring,
and provisioning all (DOD and commercial) SATCOM
service and access to STEP/Teleport and DISN
services - Update SHF SAR to include all fields required for
commercial SATCOMeliminate the CSS
