• Campaigned as a common manwhich he actually
  was.
• New voting policies allowed him to win.
• Men no longer had to own property to vote.
• Common men voted him into office.

States Rights Issue

• Vice President John Calhoun was in favor of
  States Rights.
• Nullification Theory States can nullify (get rid
  of) federal laws that they think are
  unconstitutional.
• South Carolina nullified a tax they didnt like
  and threatened to secede.
• Jackson threatened to hang Calhoun.
• A compromise was reached.

National Bank Issue

• To Jackson, the Bank only benefited the wealthy
  and influenced the govt.
• The Bank did give the wealthy preferential
  treatment.
• Jackson withdrew govt from the Bank, and put
  it in pet banks that were loyal to him.
• The Bank ended up closing.

Indian Removal Act

• The Five Civilized Tribes (including the
  Cherokee Nation) had adopted European lifestyles
  in the Southeast.
• In 1828, Americans discovered gold in Georgia, in
  the middle of Cherokee Territory.
• These men wanted the Cherokee out of their way!
• They began terrorizing the Cherokee.

Cherokee Nation in Court

• Cherokees took their case to the Supreme Courts
  Chief Justice John Marshall.
• At first, the court refused to hear the case.
• The second time, the Cherokee won!
• Jackson ignored the ruling

• Jackson sent the military to force the Cherokee
  to Oklahoma.
• Traveled during the winter, many on foot.
• Thousands died along the way.
