    Bay Colony in 1630.

  • Between 1630 and 1640, more than 20,000 people
journeyed from England to Massachusetts in the
    Great Migration.

Settling Connecticut
  • In 1636, a Puritan minister named Thomas Hooker
led his followers to a build a settlement called
    Hartford on the Connecticut River.
  • This new colony was named Connecticut. The
settlers wrote the Fundamental Orders of
Connecticut to govern their colony because Thomas
Hooker wanted to set limits on the power of
    government.

Toleration in Rhode Island
  • Roger Williams was a Puritan minister who
believed that the Church and the State should be
    completely separate.
  • He also believed in toleration, or a willingness
to let others practice their own beliefs.
  • In 1636, Williams was ordered to leave
Massachusetts. He fled south, establishing the
colony of Rhode Island as a place where people of
different faiths could worship in peace.

6
The Trial of Anne Hutchinson
  • Anne Hutchinson was a Puritan who went on trial
for opinions that went against Puritan teachings.
  • She made a mistake during her trial by saying
that God spoke directly to her.
  • She was ordered to leave Massachusetts and
    found shelter in Rhode Island.

7
A Life of Hard Work
  • The Puritans believed that hard work was just
as important as following Gods commandments.
  • New Englands rocky soil and short growing season
were poor for farming. Colonists did learn to
grow Native American crops, such as corn, beans,
    and squash.
  • The forests were full of game and trees that
could be tapped for maple syrup. Clearing
forests led to thriving industries in making
    lumber and in shipbuilding.

8
  • New Englands long coastline led to a growing
    fishing industry, commercial shipping, and
    whaling.
