Why didnt Slavery die out?
  • Many founders had hoped it would die out on its
    own, but
  • In 1793, Eli Whitney invented the Cotton Gin
  • Farming cotton became more profitable the
    demand for slaves grew
  • The South became even more dependent on slave
    labor

Why did the South hate the tariff?
  • A tariff is a tax on imported goods
  • High tariffs favored the North because it helped
    their factories to compete with England
  • High tariffs hurt the South because they had very
    few factories had to pay higher prices for
    manufactured goods

How did the South respond to the Tariff of
Abominations?
  • In 1828, Congress raised the tariff to what the
    South considered sinful rates
  • South Carolina protested by publishing a pamphlet
    secretly authored by John C. Calhoun
  • Denounced the tariff as unjust unconstitutional
  • Proposed that the states should nullify (declare
    null void) the tariff within their borders
  • Congress passed a new tariff bill in 1832 that
    lowered the tariff, but was still protective
  • South Carolina responded by nullifying the tariff
    threatening to leave the Union if the
    government attempted to collect the tariff by
    force

How was the Nullification Crisis resolved?
  • Although he was not a fan of the tariff,
    President Jackson would not permit nullification
  • He privately threatened to have the nullifiers
    hanged
  • He sent military reinforcements to South Carolina
    issued a proclamation against nullification
  • Hoping to avoid civil war, Henry Clay helped to
    get a compromise bill through Congress
  • It gradually reduced the tariff over a period of
    10 yrs
  • S.C. backed down and repealed the nullification
    ordinance
