Election of 1800

• In this election, Thomas Jefferson, an
  anti-Federalist, replaces John Adams, a
  Federalist.
• Its the first time in history an opposing party
  takes power peacefully
• Revolution of 1800

Election of 1824

• Four candidates JQ Adams, Andrew Jackson,
  William Crawford (GA), and Henry Clay
• Calhoun (another favorite) leaves to run for VP
  and Crawford has a stroke, so Jackson gets the
  South
• Jackson wins electoral, but has too few to win.
• Vote goes to the House (which Amendment?), who
  picks JQA as President when he picks Clay to be
  his Sec. of State (the corrupt bargain)
• Jackson is the only man to win Electoral and
  popular but lose the Presidency

Election of 1876

• Rutherford B Hayes v. Samuel Tilden
• Tilden wins the popular, but results from SC, OR,
  LA and (surprise) FL are contested.
• An informal meeting allows the (Southern)
  electoral votes to go to Hayes, as he promises to
  end Reconstruction if elected
• Hayes wins 185-184

Election of 1912

• WH Taft v. Woodrow Wilson v. Teddy Roosevelt
• TR picked Taft as his replacement, but Tafts
  policies made TR mad and created a third party
  (Progressive, or Bull Moose)
• Wilson wins, TR is 2nd, Taft is 3rd.

Election of 1948

• Harry S Truman v. Thomas Dewey v. Strom Thurmond
  (Dixiecrat) v. Henry Wallace (FDRs VP)
• Thurmond gets 39 Electoral votes, all in the
  South
• Truman was picked to lose, but a late surge in
  the west put him back in the White House.
• However, the Chicago Tribune didnt get the memo.

• John F Kennedy v. Richard Nixon (VP)
• First Presidential televised debate
• JFK wins on TV, Nixon wins on radio
• JFK wins popular vote by 2/10
• Alleged voting fraud in Texas (home of JFKs VP)
  and Chicago (home of the Mob)

Election of 2000

• Al Gore (VP) v. George W Bush
• Gore wins popular vote, but votes in (you guessed
  it) Florida are contested
• Massive recount of votes begins (hanging chad)
• Supreme Court 5-4 rules on Dec 13th that Gore
  can have a recount, but it must end midnight
  on.Dec 13th
• Bush wins the election 271-266, with one
  abstaining Gore elector
