Cherokee Homes
  • The Cherokees had two homes.
  • They had a winter house and summer house.
  • The summer house was made of plaster with clay
    inside and out and shingled with tree bark.
  • The winter house was made of wattle and daub.
  • A fire burned all night and all day inside of the
    winter house.
  • Several families lived inside the houses.

The Cherokee Man
  • Men would clear the fields for planting and
    cutting down trees.
  • They would make houses and weapons
  • The men would use spears, blow guns, bow and
    arrows to hung and fish.
  • Cherokee men played stickball.
  • Men had to be strong athletes to be in the game.

The Cherokee Woman
  • The women would smoke the meat, plant seeds,
    tanned the hides, make and repaired cloths, and
    care for live stock.
  • They made baskets, rugs and they made mats.
  • The woman could chose her husband.
  • She would take care of the children and the
    house.
  • The women owned the house, property and children.

Children
  • Fathers showed their sons how to hunt and fish.
  • The most important person in a childs life was
    his uncle.
  • For the children, childhood was a very happy
    time.

  • Cherokee children were never slapped.
  • Children lean about house duties by their
    mothers.
  • Children play together until the age of ten.
  • Children learned to respect everything.

Clothes
  • Men wore breechclouts.
  • The breechclout was made of deerskin.
  • The breechclout was twenty inches wide.
  • It was forty inches long.
  • They would tie a skinny piece of leather around
    his waist like bells.
  • The woman wore skirts.
  • They wore dresses made from deerskin.
  • They wore blouses.

Crafts
  • Dugout canoes were made by men.
  • Men also painted the canoes .They made form
    plants, bark, and clay.
  • Beautiful basket were made by woman by using
    river cane and white oak.
  • Woman made splint baskets made form white oak.
  • They put the splints in to water to make them
    soft.

Cherokee Language
  • Sequoyah was a Cherokee. His mother was a
    Cherokee and his father was a white trader.
  • In 1809, Sequoyah wrote a Cherokee alphabet that
    had 85 symbols in it.
  • Sequoyah created the Cherokee Phoenix Newspaper.
  • When he first wrote his alphabet he first taught
    his daughter
  • His alphabet was a great accomplishment, the
    people could learn to read and write.

  • The peace flag and the National flag.
  • On the Peace flag red and white stand for peace
    and war.

  • On the National flag in red letters on the white
    stripe appeared the words Cherokee Baves.
  • Today employing black letters are southern
    Cherokee Nation.

The Trail of Tears
  • During 1829 gold was found and it was in Cherokee
    land.
  • On May 28,1830 President Jackson passed the
    Indian Removal Act.
  • All of the Cherokees were removed from their
    homes.

  • All of their weapons were taken away.
  • The were force to walk to Oklahoma. Many people
    died and many babies were born on the way.
