  • - On the basis of the study group work,
presentation of the Anellovirus genus description
was made in the VIIIth report of the ICTV
  • At present time, all anelloviruses are grouped
in a floating genus that comprises one species
Torque teno virus (TTV), one tentative species
Torque teno mini virus (TTMV) and several, as yet
    unclassified animal viruses, with similar
    circular single-stranded DNAs.
  • One of the main aspects of the Anellovirus genus
is the extraordinary high genetic diversity
    possibly existing between viral strains.
  • A growing number of complete or partial TTV/TTMV
    sequences is collected on databases.
  • Next step in the description of the diversity of
these single-stranded DNA viruses would consist
of the creation of a specific family.

  • Suggestions to create a new family called
Anelloviridae, comprising a number of genera are
being considered by the ICTV study group.
  • The very high genetic divergence that exists
between TTV, TTMV and a number of unclassified
animal viruses supports the view that such
viruses might be considered as representative
    members of distinct genera.

- Similarities existing between Chicken Anemia
Virus (CAV, Gyrovirus genus) and some
anelloviruses, may lead to a review of CAVs
taxonomic position. Re-classifying CAV to the
future Anelloviridae family is a possibility.
