Blackout
During the blackouts the same thing applies as
always, you would still have to use your coupons
and ration books. If any thing happened you would
still have to carry on as normal although in
dark. Click on the button to show what you must

About Food
10
Food
People used to have bread and margarine for
breakfast but if they were lucky it would be
bread and sugar. Some people may have had toast
as one of their meals. Obviously, they would not
have a toaster so, they used to put a slice of
bread on a folk and hold it in front of a fire.
They got bread from a bakers van or a horse and
cart. It was always white bread, brown bread
would have been something foreign. Maybe
something the Germans would have had.

Information
You will need this info for the questions on the
next slide.
Lots of ships were sunken by enemies whilst
transporting food from other countries. Oranges
were only for children. America supplied 7 of
Britain's food because of the lend-lease scheme
that was set up in 1941.
They used to feed their pets with their left
overs. When the ration books and coupons came out
it was the first time most people had ever seen
butter before. Oranges were only for children.
The governments dig for victory campaign meant
vegetables did not have to be rationed. Some shop
assistants were even sent to prison for selling
goods to customers without ration coupons.

How they received their food
Before the outbreak of war Britain imported
around 55 million tons of food per year from
other countries, such as the U.S.A. and Canada.
But it wasn't just food many other things were
bought from abroad too. Things such as tea,
sugar, fruit, oil (used for petrol), wood and
rubber. All of which had to be shipped across the
Atlantic Ocean in large cargo vessels.
Inevitably once the war broke out Germany did
everything in its power to cut off these much
needed supplies, by hunting down and destroying
the convoys that carried them with their
battleships and U- boats.
