TRAINING GOALS

• Increase communication skills
• Adopt response strategies
• Deescalate EDPs (emotionally disturbed persons)
  in crisis

Final Objectives

• 1. Become familiar with the presenting signs and
  symptoms of groups of EDPs
• 2. Perform focused evaluation of emergency
  situations
• 3. Learn the recommended response strategies for
  each group in order to pace and guide EDP into
  levels more conducive to mutual communication and
  deescalate a crisis situation

Progress to date

• Expect completion of the one day training program
  in October 2006
• Will be tested in 3 regions of NS Central,
  Western and Eastern Regions
• Will conduct focus groups and questionnaires 1
  and at the 3 month level

First responders training

• Dalhousie University Initative
• RCMP has representation on the committee
• Dr Biannca Horner
• Dr Brad Kelln and Dr Scott Theriault forensic
  psychologists at NS Hospital (subject matter
  experts) and both will be the facilitators
• Dr Brad Kelln is developing the educational
  program
