CLUSTERS IN ITALY Backbone of the Italian
economy DISTRETTI according to
current Italian legislative framework at national
and regional level Industrial
districts (manufacturing sectors, bottom-up
approach) Technological districts
(High-tech sectors, top-down approach)
Meta-districts (High-tech sectors at regional
level)

- INDUSTRIAL DISTRICTS
- socio-territorial entity which is
characterised by the active presence of both a
community of people and a population of firms in
one naturally and historically bounded area. In
the district, unlike in other environments, such
as the manufacturing towns, community and firms
tend to merge
(G.
Becattini) - SOME FACTS FIGURES
- 156 INDUSTRIAL DISTRICTS IN 17 REGIONS (ISTAT
2001) - DISTRIBUTION 50 CONCENTRATED IN THE NORTH
- 30 IN THE
CENTRE - 20 IN THE
SOUTH - 25 EMPLOYEES IN ITALY ACROSS ALL SECTORS OF
PRODUCTION - 39.3 EMPLOYEES IN ITALY IN THE MANUFACTURING
SECTOR

New Materials
Novamont, today an international leader in the
manufacture of bioplastics, maintains its
original role as an incubator of new research
initiatives and as a training centre it is also
involved in the completion of its Bio-refinery
integrated in the territory. This is a new
opportunity for all the actors involved in the
production chain, from farmers to the world of
chemistry, from industry to distribution
networks, from the public authorities up to the
end consumer. The aim is to go beyond the logic
of the product and to adopt a systemic point of
view being of benefit to land competitiveness
and in the interests of quality and safety

ECO-INNOVATION BEST PRACTISES
ENEL S.p.A. 2 ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY
INNOVATION AWARDS from environmentalist
association Legambiente and the regional
government of Lombardy, in collaboration with the
Politecnico of Milan and the Luigi Bocconi
University for two projects in LIGURIA and TUSCANY
LIGURIA MARMETTOLA Project the Eugenio Montale
power plant of La Spezia employs the residues
from marble production in its desulphurization
systems. The benefits include a high level of
sulfurous emission reduction and the elimination
of discharges, as well as the reduction of water
comsumption and the trasportation of dusty
materials with marked savings of energy, scale,
fuel oil and water
TUSCANY AMIS Project (Mercury and Hydrogen
Sulfate Abatement) in Bagnore, the township of
Santa Flora in the province of Grosseto, Enel has
eliminated the annoying odors that come with the
hydrogen sulfate emission which are typical in
areas of geothermal energy production, improving
air quality and enhancing the plants territorial
integration
