SLIDESHOW – Visiting Florence. In 1293, after the political success of the guilds, the new Priors wanted to build a monument which would become the most important civic monument in Florence, the Palazzo dei Priori, seat of the Signoria, later called Palazzo Vecchio. According to tradition, the central nucleus of the building was erected by Arnolfo di Cambio between 1299 and 1304. It has the appearance of a fortress, topped by a huge open gallery, from which rises the slender tower known as the Arnolfo tower and which repeats in the belfry the design of the top of the palace. The two rows of elegant ogival mullioned windows; this is the only measured proportion to the Palace. It was subsequently enlarged by Vasari, in the sixteenth century and by Buontalenti, in the seventeenth century. Palazzo Vecchio, after having been the seat the seat of the town authorities, became the home of the Medici family.

Set in the beautiful mountainous northwest corner of Tuscany, the medieval city of Barga is situated on a spur overlooking the mid-Serchio River Valley. Barga, in its heyday, was a stronghold of The Medici's Florence. Against the often fiercely independent republic of Lucca, and the Dukes of Este, or ubiquitous Visconti, it was known as Barga Fiorentina. This is still evident in its culture, language, art and architecture, and the proud Barghigiani continue to think of them as a cut above. Barga is nevertheless on the edge of the wilds of the Garfagnana, "land of wolves and outlaws" otherwise known for vast chestnut forests, wild boar, delicious pecorino cheeses and porcini mushrooms.
The figure of Neptune, made of white Carrara marble and which recalls the features of Cosimo I de' Medici, was an allusion to the maritime dominion of Florence; it stands on a pedestal decorated with the statues of Scylla and Charybdis in the center of the octagonal basin. Although the statue was not particularly appreciated (it is said that the Florentines who came to the night inauguration of the statue upon discovering the work noticed the whiteness of the statue more than its beauty, hence the name "Biancone" and coined the motto "Ammannato, Ammannato, che bel marmo hai rovinato!") the work continued over the next ten years, with the help of the best sculptors in the city for the edge of the basin. At the feet of Neptune are three tritons intent on playing tibias that spurt water. The basin is octagonal and contains the four horses of Neptune's chariot, whose wheels are celestial wheels with the signs of the zodiac, symbolizing the passage of time

The Luxembourg Garden was acquired by Marie de Médicis between 1614 and 1631, and underwent many transformations up until the renovations by Haussmann, when it took its current shape. While its area - approximately 23 hectares - is roughly equivalent to the initial acquisitions of Marie de Médicis, the layout has changed completely over the centuries. It was not until the end of the Second Empire that the current boundaries of the garden were defined.

Barga is part of hidden Tuscany, a town with a view of the Apuan Alps in a region known as the Garfagnana, north of the town of Lucca. Barga, along with other small villages around it, has a link to Scotland, as many Italians went there to find work in leaner times. Some returned to open shops in Barga. You'll see not only Scottish crafts, but hear English spoken more often than you'd think in an out-of-the-way village.
