co-inventor of the internal combustion engine
astronomer Galileo, whose reputed experiments of
dropping objects off the Leaning Tower of Pisa
are legendary Leon Battista Alberti, Vittorio
Alfieri, and many others.

to the world in the fields of art, architecture,
science, technology, astrology, philosophy, music

Donatello-Crucifixion "Below the screen in the
same church, he made a wooden crucifix and asked
his close friend, Filippo Brunelleschi, for his
opinion. Filippo answered that it seemed to him
that Donatello had put on the cross the body of a
peasant, not the body of Jesus Christ. Donatello
retorted 'You get some wood and try to make one
yourself.' Filippo returned home and started work
on a crucifix."

The Basilica di Santa Croce is also one of the
finest museums in Italy. In the refectory in the
convent portion of the great church is an actual
museum, the Museo dell'Opera di Santa Croce that
was founded primarily as a memorial to those who
died in the 1966 River Arno flooding.

A damaged work is the great Crucifix of Cimabue.
It was the major work of art lost in the flood
in Florence in 1966. Much of the paint from the
body and face washed away.

The Museo dell'Opera di Santa Croce is housed
mainly in the refectory, also off the cloister.

For the end wall of their refectory the
Franciscans commissioned Taddeo Gaddi to paint a
Last Supper, an appropriate subject for the
friars dining hall. Above the last Supper Gaddi
painted a Tree of Life, a devotional subject
derived from the writings of the Franciscan St
Bonaventure.
