Early Years
  • born in Urbino in 1483
  • received his first instruction in
  • the techniques of painting from
  • his father, Giovanni Sanzi
  • Giovanni introduces him to the humanist court of
    Urbino, one of Italys most active cultural
    centers

Pious Apprentice
  • At the age of fourteen, Raffaello is sent to a
    very talented teacher called Pietro Perugino
  • Perugino and his paintings have a strong
    influence on Raffaellos early artworks
  • With his great understanding of art, Raffaello
    quickly surpasses his teacher and ventures out on
    his own to the great city of Florence

From Apprentice to Master
  • In Florence, Raffaello finds a very competitive
    environment
  • He adopts new painting techniques such as
    shading, anatomy, and frozen action
  • His style is influenced by that of Michelangelo
    and Leonardo Da Vinci
  • In just a few years, he earns the title of
    prince of painters and becomes the most
    sought-after artist in the city

  • Raffaello painted more then forty Madonnas before
