I am a great believer in simplicity, when this
is possible. For example, the point in science is
to achieve as many results as possible with the
fewest hypotheses. So, in order to simplify the
problem of depicting the growth of population in
the Detroit region, I tried to eliminate
complicating factors.This is when I invoked the
first law of geography¹ everything is related
to everything else but near things are more
related than distant things. Doing this allowed
me to concentrate on local effectsusing the idea
of a change in the "unit inhabitant," and
ignoring many other possible influences. ²
