The North is mad that the South left the U.S.
wanted to hold the country together

• In South Carolina (Confederacy), state army
  (Union soldiers) would not leave Fort Sumter.
• Lincoln (in charge of the army) would not give it
  up

• Lasted for 34 hours
• Confederacy won

• Stonewall Jackson- Confederacy
• Battle was hard for both sides- realized that war
  would not end soon
• Confederacy won

• Deadliest day of the war
• 23,000 casualties

• Both sides wanted control of the Mississippi
  River
• Union victory

• Lasted 3 days
• Union won!

Atlanta

• The main railroad center of the South

Stone Mountain is a Civil war memorial.
Stonewall Jackson, Robert E. Lee, Jefferson
Davis are carved on the mountain.

March to the Sea

• Sherman and army destroyed everything from
  Atlanta to Savannah.
• Burned farmland
• Stole food
• Wrecked railroad tracks

• Both sides met near Richmond and fought for
  almost a year there.
• Confederacy ran out of supplies and food
• Confederacy surrendered at the Appomattox
